Cannot view thumbnails/wallpaper and cannot set wallpaper

Hi,

I recently had an unfortunate incident with some spyware (Security Shield) and in cleaning spyware and viruses off, I've noticed that I can no longer view thumbnails or set wallpaper via Personalization or Right Click -> Set as Desktop Background. The first screenshot shows what I see when trying to set a background via Personalization and the second screenshot shows a folder view that should show thumbnails.

Has anyone else had this problem? What worked for you?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome
It seems that we have had the same problem just a short time ago. Help was offered by our own Brink, who is one of the best in these areas.

We can use that as our strarting point and try to offer additional help.
If the above does not work, the problem may be a registry problem. Registry may have been changed by the virus.

If you set up a new adminstrative account, do you still have the problem?

Hi richc46,

I have tried everything listed in that thread. The sfc /scannow didn't detect or fix anything, I've checked to make sure thumbnails are enabled, and Windows Photo Gallery is set to default, and this issue still exists.

Thanks,

As I suggested in my first post. See if it works in a new Adminsitrative account.

Go to search and type the word Aero.
Find and fix transparency and other problems, should pop up. Give that a try.

In addition, unless you have used Malwarebytes, dont say that you did it.
Download and make full scan with Malwarebytes. Make sure that you update it first.

Try in clean boot mode and see if that helps

Go to device manager and make sure your graphics driver is updated and does not show a yellow warning marker.

Hi Rich,

I guess I dont have aero on my machine. Performing a search for aero did not show any options for troubleshiiting visual issues.

Performing a clean boot also did not help.

I have run Malwarebytes' twice in the last 24 hours. I ran it a couple times when I discovered having the virus.

Thanks,
-RyGuy

Hey Richc,
At the risk of butting my nose in your posts. I had to search to see if Aero was on my system for similar reasons.
Also to see, if it was,-- was it enabled.

As it turned out Aero was not on my system, but found out the following way:-

Start, Control Panel, Personalise, Window Colour & Appearance.

Appearance Settings window opens, Press Advanced button opens Advanced window.

Below is Item: with small downward arrow, once pressed opens a list of items, desktop, active title bar etc.

At the top, on mine anyway was 3D Objects. If Aero enabled it would be listed there.

Sorry no pictures, better & easier to follow, but no snapping tool on vista HB.

I don't know if this helps or hinders?

Or even if 64bit has exactly same controls?
Apologies if 'OOO'

TY Kesume, but if putting aero into search does not comeup with the fix that I was looking for, I do not know to find it. I have Windows 7 and it works the way that I said.

Hi Richc,
Just trying to learn here, tell m if i;m a pain in the neck!

The above thread:- sfc/scan shows ok, but is the sfc sure of finding & repairing all files?
Has the 'nasties' somehow corrupted flow from card to Personalise?
By looking at files in dwm.exe any good, or are they different?
Graphic card will be up to date, and not damaged?

Sorry, i'm trying to follow the flow of the pictures from file to desktop.
I am totally new at this but tring to learn from the threads, posts, and you guts & gals.

Your questions are not a problem, and you can ask as many as you like. May I suggest, however, that you start your own thread. You may include a link to this thread if you so desire. The Forum likes to limit threads to one question, so that answers will not become confusing, and each poster has the undivided attention of the member answering.

That being said, to answer your questions, now
In my opinion SFC has a poor record of finding and correcting problems. If errors are found and not corrected the next step is usually a repair install. We are very fortunate, howver, we have a member Niemiro, who can make many of the necessary changes manually.
It was my thought from the beginning that the virus corrupted the personalize process. I am merely trying to find ways to remedy the situation, without resorting to a repair install.
The graphic card should not be damaged, its hardware, but the driver may be.

Taken on board comments re: threads, see your point. Will try harder.
