Video Icons only show default picture

Hi, All my video icons have the default picture in Vista Home Premium yet the same files have picture icons in XP. I've tried changing file options and types but cannot find a solution... Can anyone help?

Cheers

Thanks Richard but it didn't help. Strange thing is that if I launch Windows Media Player it shows all my video files with a picture of each of their contents. However, if I open explore all those same video files have their default icons... I have access to another Vista computer that is exactly the same as mine that doesn't have this problem. This has been an ongoing problem that I have tried to solve previously but nothing seems to fix it. I was hoping that someone on this forum had a similar experience.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated

Cheers

What is the extension?
Have you got a default program associated to this type of file?

It's only my video files...extensions are .avi .mpeg .mov As far as I know the only default program is Windows Media Player... Picture files are fine.

Thanks, I have already done this but it made no difference.

Hi DVDUDE

Try it with the following registry file.
After downloading, click AVI DefaultIcon.reg and confirm.
Hope it helps.

Does the other computer use a different default program or codecs for the video files?

Hi Roy69, The default program and codecs in the other computer are the same, however I do have some different software programs in mine, so maybe one of these is causing the problem, but how does one find out which, short of unistalling each.

Try changing the default to quicktime to see if the thumbs appear, then change back to media player.

Quicktime makes no difference. What I don't understand is why when I open Windows Media player from its icon on my desktop, all the video files appear with picture icons, yet if I open an explore window beside the WMP window all the video files in the explore window have their default icons..

Thanks sweet, but I prefer not to mess with the registry as I am not that experienced.

I'd like to say thanks to all who have tried to help on this problem, but I think I will leave it at that. Never liked Vista so maybe I'll upgrade to Win 7 which should fix the problem.

Cheers
