A minor problem...

Yesterday my PC froze and I restarted it.
It wanted to do a CHKDSK and it asked that it was recommended to do so I didn't cancel it.
But now when it starts it reaches to stage 1 3% at file 137069 or something like that.
My problem is... It doesn't finish it.
At a certain point it says . of 5 is done and than the system starts to start up and I get to the normal Vista Desktop.
But after a few minutes ((OR seconds, depends on the mood of the computer...)) it doesn't want to close programs anymore and at a certain point a black screen pops up with the message Failure -. Security Options.
Than it goes back to normal and the programs wich I wanted to close are closed, but this keeps going on and on and on...
Does anyone know how I get my PC back to normal again and let it finish my CHKDSK???

Thanks,
-Roger

Hello Roger, welcome to the forum.

You may need to run CHKDSK in safe mode from a command prompt...

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again, tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys...Or SafeMode with Networking.
Press Enter to boot into Safe Mode.
When it sartup in safemode, Open a command prompt and type "CHKDSK C: /R" (without the quotes.)

It says that it cannot preform it because the volume is in use and if I want to schedule it for the next restart, should I do it?

yes, you should restsrt it.

Let me know the results after everything done.

Just did the checkdisk and it still stops at 3 percent at file 137069 or something close to that.
I also took a picture of it, but I don't think that will be necessairy, I will now try out ?Rich's thing.

It is of utmost importance that you back up and verify the integrity of the disc. The chkdsk problem can be solved later, if your HD is ok.

Hi Roger,

Rich is very right. It is of utmost importance that you back up and verify the integrity of the disc.

If CHKDSK finds a problem on the disk, it can take a very long time trying to correct it. Runs of 8 hours or more are not uncommon (I once had a server off-line for 3 days, while CHKDSK ran!).

Stage 1 of 5 is where Chkdsk verifies each file record segment in the master file table (MFT). I'd guess that it has found a record segment which is damaged in the MFT. Eventually, it looks like that:

File record segment 41109 is unreadable.
File verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 5)...

or else eventually blue-screen, with STOP 0x24 or similar. It shouldn't hang indefinitely (it might - but it shouldn't).

Sometimes you can use the "/i" and "/c" parameters to reduce the amount of time which CHKDSK takes to run. But I don't think they will help in this case - the delay is not in checking the indexes (Stage 2), but before that.

You can also run the command:

C:\>chkntfs c:

to see if the dirty bit is set on C:/ If the dirty bit is set, the system thinks that there is a problem on the file system, and wants to run CHKDSK. The disk is unstable and needs to be verified ASAP. If the dirty bit is clear, the system thinks the file system is clean; even though CHKDSK has a problem verifying the MFT when it runs. Doesn't solve your problem; but
handy to know.

If CHKDSK gets stuck at "3 Percent complete. (41108 of 137024 File Records Processed)" and *never* gets any further, even aftwer 12 or 24 hours, the Master File Table may be corrupted. The best way to repair the MFT is to ...
well, run CHKDSK :-) but obviously that isn't an option. In theory, there are ways to repair the MFT manually, for example by using a hex editor. This is possible; it is also extremely fiddly, complex, time-consuming and error-prone. In practice, if you reach this stage your best bet would be to back up your data; reformat the whole hard disk, and then reinstall from
scratch. It might lack finesse but it will probably be quicker, and more reliable, than other methods.

Other folks may have additional ideas for you; hope this helps a bit.

Thanks

I did that and it told me to run the CHKDSK at the next restart, wich I did, but as I said earlier, it stops at 3 percent...
Every time...
And I can't perform it IN safe mode because that it says that it's in use

My Computer

Could one of you please type out every option I should try in my case..
Since all these options and talk I don´t understand much about got me a bit confused right there....
Please tell me which ones to perform and how and stuff...

Thanks.

My Computer

Start with the first method. If you have a problem, post and we will help. I think that all options should be tried, since you are having a problem with the chkdsk.
It may very well be a problem with the chkdsk software, itself. In that case just pefrom a defrag and use the Hard Drive test as I posted.

Just to be sure. Run a full anti virus scan and download and make a full scan with malwarebytes. "In use" in safe mode, very suspicious.
