Do you mean just pop a already installed os into your system?

MS adds lots of equipment dependant files in the os, Plus Windowws isn't free .... But I've done this a few times as i've updated hardware, and onlky needed to do drivers.

Do you mean the cd drive was not visible with Vista but was with Ubuntu?
If so try to delete the lower filters in regedit like this.

    press Windows key and R
Type regedit, and then click OK.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Restart the computer.

    Re: O.S.

Windows only works on one computer and only one.
It is the way they made it.
Made it like that so you can not steal it without
    paying for it.
If you want to use windows on more computers
then it came on you have to have the numbers (key)
    for it to work.
    Hope you understand.

The corporate is different. It is paid for in bundles.
Still if you pay for 10 (just a number) you can only use it on that amount.
