Desktop or Laptop?

I searched for a thread like this, and all there was email threads. I'm surprised there isn't a thread like this, but if there is then I'm sorry.



Anyway, would you prefer a desktop or a laptop?


Right now I'm satisfied with my desktop, but when the time comes for it, I will move on to a laptop since it's more capable of travelling

Choosing between a laptop and desktop can be a difficult decision. The bottom line comes down to portability. If you will need or use the portability of a laptop, then it can be a powerful tool for you and worth the extra money.

Laptops have a great advantage in terms of their portability. If you carry a laptop with you, your applications and documents are always immediately available. With a wireless card, your laptop can also access the Internet while on the go, so you have more places to do research, check your email, and be more productive.

Desktops offer other advantages. Although laptop prices have come down and performance has increased, most desktops offer a better price-to-performance ratio. Desktops also still hold some ergonomic advantages over laptops.

So finally I can say that your decision should be based primarily on how you plan to use your computer and the size of your computing budget. Lastly, the choice is yours. Evaluate and review your computing needs and decide what's best for you.

Easy... you get 4 times the computer for the same price.

You get exactly what you want in a desktop...

I am fortunate to have both a laptop and desktop and are used for different reasons.
Laptop for portability and availability when I am on the go. Cons...Battery life and internet security when out and about. New and small cell phones can get your e-mail for you.

Desktop for heavy duty graphics and large monitor for readability. Cons....Stationary item only

Like Arvin stated...Your budget and what your needs are which only YOU know the answer too!

I will always use a Desktop for Main Computing Tasks and whenever I need portability it is mainly for the Web so I would use a Tablet and not a laptop

A desktop is WAYYYY better than a laptop in my book - especially if you have a big monitor (22" or more). You can also easily add/change components (GPU, SSD, PSU, etc.).


I also have a laptop for off-site duties (e.g. teaching at the computer club). But I really use that only to prepare things (that I copy from the desktop) and off-site use. I paid twice as much for the laptop than for all my desktop equipment, but it is still a lot less useful.

For travel, I suggest you look into a Netbook or an inexpensive Tablet. The Nook Color for $249 comes to mind, now that they run full Android 2.2. The 10" Tablets are too bulky for real portability - and at least $500.

I have only ever used a laptop and the thing that lets it down is the graphics.
I can watch HD movies but not play any games that have fast moving action.
A desktop can be upgraded much easier and cheaper than a laptop.
If you plan to play games be prepared to spend a fair bit if getting a laptop.

Desktop for sure, and if you ever have to work on it, "easy", but not a laptop unless you really know what you are doing...
