Error loading operating system

I was attempting to load XP on a separate drive from my Vista machine. Booted in the XP CD, formatted and began the installation. After the setup files were copied to the other drive, the computer rebooted to finish the installation. Upon reboot, I got "Error loading operating system".

Reading further, I see that the mbr, boot sector and boot files were overwritten on my computer. I booted from my Vista DVD, navigated to the Boot directory, and issued "Bootsect.exe /NT60 All" at command prompt. Says it was successful. I reboot and still get the same error.

I also tried the automatic repair option. It didn't find any problems and didn't fix the error.

Booted again to command prompt from the Vista DVD. This time tried:
bootrec /FixMbr
bootrec /FixBoot
bootrec /RebuildBcd

When I issued last command, it said it was successful but # Windows installations found was 0.

Also did a chkdsk on my hard drive and came back clean. All files and directories are still present as well.

Rebooted and still getting the same error. What do I need to do?

Hi
If your xp installation went through smoothly without skipping any of its files then i'd suggest you to download EasyBCD. This one will allow you to modify your mbr at ease, it works fine in vista but in xp it requires dot net framework 2.

Thank you. Unfortunately, since I can not boot in to Windows at all, that won't help my situation. However, I did look at their site based on your suggestion and I did find their instructions to repair the bootloader via the Vista DVD recovery, which includes some additional command arguments and how to zero out and recreate the bcd registry. I'll give it a shot tonight. If I'm able to get in to Windows, I'll download their software and make a backup to the BCD registry.

Again, thanks!

Hi
Sorry for being too first since i thought u had a chance in booting quite well in vista os thus having troubles in dual booting. If that was not the case and you keep on receiving "non system error" once you boot your machine then u'll have to recover your vista first coz it's not the mbr alone which was overwritten but more other files required in booting. So as you boot with your Dvd and selecting repair option don go for a recovery console but select the first option in that list and let vista do it's work on it's own. After its done u'll be presented with a report of what the error was, restart your system with vista Dvd still inside n see if the matter is resolved.

Hi
try repairing and boot in xp os then use Easybcd to search for your vista installation files. This would solve your issue if not then check your windows installation folder in both drives using Linux based live cd. Both windows installation files shud exist in both drives, if not then u scrapped vista files with xps.

Thanks for the help. I took the drive out and tried rebuilding with Easybcd on a computer running XP, but the program said that option wasn't available from an XP machine.

The fix I used was as follows:

Using the XP computer, I used Acronis True Image to make an image backup of the Vista partition. Put the hard drive back in the original computer and ran the Windows Vista installation. After it copied the installation files and did the first reboot to finish the install, I took the hard drive back out and put it in the other computer again. I reimaged the partition from the backup. Put it back in the original machine and it boots perfectly in to my old installation with no data loss.
