Regedit

Hello, I am not very techie. I am trying to view an image at a library site. A window keeps popping up "Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT". I found some information about this on this site but when I tried to download it another window came up that this might be harmful to my computer. Thank you for your help. SM

Most changes to the registry will give you a warning. Was it a warning like this, if so you can click ok. I would make a system restore point first though.

Welcome
The registry may very well be the brains of the compuer. Any wrong change can cause serious problems (in fact do not use any registry cleaners or maintenace programs, as they just cause problems in Vista). It seem, that you are at the point that you must update. Be sure that you follow the instructions in the above post, as well as make the back up explained in this tutorial.

I would use extreme caution before making any changes. What you will be changing are registry permissions (a safeguard to the computer) A library site asking you to make changes to the registry, be very, very careful. I would add one more advisory, there is no right or wrong, but in similar circumstances, unless the image was essential, I would not do it to my computer. Whats good for me, might not be the best thing for you, however. Good luck

I'm glad I stopped before I really did something wrong. I am a genealogist and I had located an old rev. war record but cannot open it due to this window that pops up. I'm not sure what to do now, as I said I am not techie. Thank you for any suggestions.

Let me tell you what I know. Windows comes with certain safeguards, they can be changed or removed. In this situation, the window is asking you to make changes to the registry, I do not know what changes should be made. I do know that I would not make them. We do have members here that are more proficient with registry problems than me and if they see this post, they may give you further instructions. If so be sure to ask about the potential consequences of such a change.

At the bottom of the library page, it says a tiff view is necessary to view the image. When I clicked on tiff viewer, I got this message
"FileNET Panagon IDM Viewer has stopped workingl
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I went in 'Problem reports and history' on my computer and see this problem has occurred many times before, I have not received a solution though. Thank you again. SM
