Help, can't upgrade.

Hi,
I'm currently running Vista Home premium 32 bit on a 64bit computer. I've recently bought Vista Ultimate x64 as i'd like to get full use out of my pc's 4GB ram along with the other benefits that come with Ultimate.
My problem is this though, It will not install. When I insert the Ultimate disk I get a window popping up saying,
"Setup can not run on this version of the operating system. To install windows please try booting from the install media".

I have been into the Boot menu in the bios and turned off all my boot devices apart from the CD Rom. When I restart it still loads Home premium even with everything turned off.

Am I missing something or is there another way around this?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Welcome
It sounds like you are doing it correctly, but evidently you are not. Maybe this will help

If that is correct you may need to set to IDE

The disk controller (or "hard disk controller") is the circuit which allows the CPU to communicate with a hard disk, floppy disk or other kind of disk drive. The most common are IDE and SCSI controllers. Most home personal computers use IDE controllers, whereas, high end PCs, professional workstations and network file servers generally have SCSI adaptors.

Hi Rich,
They are the things i've already tried. I've been in and out of the Bios about a dozen times tonight and nothing works. I've tried just moving the CD/dvdrom to the top of the list and having all the other devices after it. I've also put the CD/dvdrom at the top of the list and disabled everything else, but still, it somehow manages to bypass the CD/dvd rom drive and boot from the HDD that has been disabled!!

The dvd is fine. I've tried it in my wife's laptop. Loads with no problem. What do I need to do with the IDE settings? I've installed many an OS before but it has either been on a blank system or an overwrite using the same OS. The pc I have now is only a couple of months old. I didn't have any trouble loading Vista Home Premium on to the blank drive but this is driving me mad now.

Go to BIOS and look for the IDE setting
If you were able to boot before, that is not it,however.

Read this carefully.
We have mentioned everything, except that your computer may require that you press a key during boot to begin the process from the DVD. Try to boot again and press a key and see what happens

Does not work

Then try this, get a bootable CD, I suggested one already and see if it boots on your computer. This is not the same as booting the problem CD from another computer

With the results, we will know exactly where the problem is. If another CD can boot in your computer, somehow its the DVD, even though it boots in the other. Get or burn another CD. If you burn do so at speed 2X.

What computer are you updating? Might help.

As mentioned, usuallyyou set the cd/dvd rom to first boot, and your good.

f8 is sometimes the key you gotta push.

Ok, still no joy. Here's what i've tried today.

Tried booting another cd. No problem! PC picks it up straight away. In fact even when I put the Windows disk i'm trying to install, it picks it up. Just won't let me install it!

Been in and out of the Bios turning things on and off. Disabled IDE controller and all my drives. Even set the only boot device as CDROM. I've done both of these things together and one at a time. Still no joy. Also coupled this action with those listed below. Nada!

Then as you said Rich, i've booted the pc and pressed various buttons at start up. DEL takes me to the Bios. TAB just takes me to a screen with loads on white text on a black background and a countdown in the bottom left hand corner. That says to press ESC to load (or some such). Lastly i've hit F8. That gives me the choice to boot from a certain device (Hard drive of cdrom). So given those choices I picked CDROM. Still didn't work. It just booted from the HDD and good ol' home premium pops up.

I only need to get to the screen that lets me see all the drives so I can format the partition with my OS on.

Odd. Is the cd rom plugged in? Had to ask.
