User profile failed login (I've tried all suggestions, and nothing has worked.)

Hi,
I have a Toshiba computer with Windows Vista. Last week I received the 'user profile' error with the temp profile. I went through the .ba, .bak changing process but every time I did it, I would restart my computer and the temp profile would be right back. The Word documents I had saved on my desktop, I could not access through another admin profile but the things, I saved in my documents open without a problem. I went ahead an deleted both my original profile and the temp, restarted my computer both profiles were gone. Went on an admin profile tried to open up the desktop Word documents from my deleted profile, the Word icon on the document was faded and the beginning of the document started with these two symbols ~$ so, I click on it and get an error message saying "the destination of this desktop could not be found make sure you have the name typed in right." Same message before I deleted the temp and original profile. I got three file recovery programs which open the Word documents but, I get a few lines of blocks and symbols.

I have also done a system restore with no success, and a clean boot which was unsuccessfull as well. I have no interest in getting the profile back, I just simply need to get the docs, pdfs, pics, etc., from the profiles desktop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Ericka

Hi Richard,

Thank you for responding. I have already tried the first two tutorials, which did not help/change anything.

I tried the Ubuntu Live CD suggestion, and this did not work. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I hope you made it out ok.

Thank you,

Ericka

Hello,

I have an external hard drive, and was wondering if I, transfered the data to that, would I be able to extract my documents? If so, what would I need to transfer (i.e,. the shortcuts that do not open or the documents that contain symbols when I open them [which I first must access through a recovery program])?

I am trying to do anything to get these documents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,

Ericka

Ubuntu is the best way to get your doucments. If you did it correctly and it did not work, you most likely have a hardware problem. If the problem is the hard drive the documents may be lost. If the problem is other than hardware, your stuff may be safe after the computer is repaired.
The best software (free) that I am aware of is number one here:

Now this is one we are the number one Vista forum on the net, we give hints like this
After all else has failed and you are ready to forget about your stuff. Have someone remove the hard drive, put it in a baggie and then put it in the freezer over night. The next morning install the hard drive (quickly) and your stuff should be available for back up, for a short period.
