im having major problems with my dell inspiron 1545 laptop. ill try be a s breif but as descriptive as needed. i recently carried out a full dell system restore due to the computer freezing. once the restore had been completed the laptop then played up ont the start up with a blue screen carrying out a system dump. once this had finished the laptop operated asif it was brand new?

It then downloaded some automatic updates when connected to the internet and i downloaded vlc media player and everything seemed fine. i then shut down the laptop once more.

on start up the laptop will not proceed past the windows error recovery page!!??!! no matter what option i choose, in any of the menus either by hitting F2 F12 or F5. non of the repair tools work or anything??

the laptop just processes the choice and temporarily reboots and brings me straight back to the windows error recover page.

So i dont know whats going on? is my hard drive still ok? its still saying i have windows 7 but wont load it!

do i need a recovery disk? re install windows?

im not sure, hopefully someone out the might have some sort of idea or advice that i can take to getting it sorted.

any suggestions are welcome

Kind regards

Brett :(

Welcome Bret,
Not much that I can do but take an educated guess. You had a problem which resulted in you making a restore. This resulted in a blue screen and the problem continued. It seems to be a hardware problem with the computer. It can be the hard drive; as well as many other problems.
Do you hear any beeps when you try to boot? Try with speakers on.

Hello bretth51 and welcome to the forums

There's no need for this at the moment, the problem could be due to corruption of your Windows files for all we know at this stage :)

Try doing this to backup your data:

Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek

If Ubuntu can't access your files, then it's likely that you've got a problem with your hard drive. Even if you've got a problem with your hard drive, we can have a go at recovering it. If we can't get your data back, then you may have to consider having your data recovered. Do you know what size the hard drive is that they will replace for you, for the £150 fee? Because £90 is quite a lot for a hard drive in this age

Yes, can be the hard drive or other hardware. For an easy test, try in safe mode, if the problem persisists, I would lean toward hardware.
In addition, you can download the Seven upgrade advisor and see if it picks up any problems

Try the safe mode, first. Yes, looks like me, you and Tom are leaning in that direction.

£90 is a lot for a 250GB hard drive! I found a Seagate one on Amazon for £37.33

Okay, try Ubuntu and let us know how that goes :)

Sounds like the hard drive like we first guessed. If you want try to download Ubuntu to save your stuff. If Ubuntu does not work, looks even more like a hard drive. You will have to bite the bullet and get a new drive.

Bretth51, how confident are you with using a computer? Do you have any experience with linux? Ubuntu in particular

There are tools which you can get in Ubuntu that will attempt to recover your data from a faulty hard drive, but it is a complicated procedure and you will need to know what you are doing. I can give you instructions, but there's not a lot more I can do to help, the rest will be down to you :)

How do you feel about this?

Tom
