Multiple backup folders

Have a quick question -- I have automatic backups set up to go on an external hd -- and now it says its full -- there are a ton of folders with previous dates -

Can I delete all of the previous folders without affecting a backup if I need it? and
is there a way for me to configure the backups so it overwrites the last folder? if anyone has any knowledge of these things, I would really appreciate the information.

Thanks!!!

You probably have it set up for incremental backups. An incremental backup is all the new or changed files since the last incremental or full backup. They add up. The problem is if you start deleting them and you don't know what you're deleting you could either delete your full backup or the most recent version of files that you've changed since the last full backup. Does that make sense? For a complete restore all incrementals are needed.

It sounds like what you want is a differential which is all the new or changed files since the last full backup. Each differential overwrites the last one so you only have the full and one differential. That's what I do on my work laptop. If you want to overhaul your backups I'd wipe them all off and do a full backup. Subsequent backups are differentials. Look through the settings for that.

This link explains it very simply: The different types of backup
This one is also good: Full, Incremental, Differential, Stack backup types built-in D_back software
