Hello, can you try to create a system restore point with another account that has Admin privileges ? Also, try doing this in safe mode also. Post back if those will work please .

The first thing that you should check when having problems with System Restore is the possiblity of a Virus. Run a full antivirus scan, download and make a full scan with the free malwarebyes. Virus creators, block system restore to be sure that you will have problems removing their handiwork.

Tried your suggestion using restore points created before and after new admin user created. Also tried same in safe mode. Same message s.r. has failed for unknown reason. Have also run malware checkers - no malware found

Use the Anti Virus and Malwarebytes. If malware is the cause, you will have bigger problems than just System Restore

attached is mbam log file. I have also tried other antimalware software including AVG, Hijack This, Norton, MS Malicious Software Remover. None find any problems other than some tracking cookies which I am aware of. However, to be on the safe side I deleted them and rebooted, but SR problem did not go away. Also have run registry scans with various software. Found some errors but none were related to sytem, dll's, windows services, startup items or active x
Thank you for the help.

Never, ever use Hijack this unless you know what you are doing because you can really screw up your system if you use it incorrectly.

Try this: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

Also are you sure that you have restore points? Have you scanned your hard drive for errors?

Also I hope that you only have one anti virus on your system because more than one could cause complications.

Well, from the Mbam log, we can pretty much rule out Malware as an issue, cause, if you had any, Mbam would have found it.. it is the world's best antimalware, which is why is is highly recommended to use. So, we are at a registry problem.
As you have done all kinds of diagnostics, from you first post's , we may be at a point of having to do a repair install , as my search through Microsoft comes up with no solutions for that event id , which i find frustrating.
Do you have OEM disk or an Install disk to do a repair install ?

I'm wondering if having more than one antivirus would cause a contention that prevents a system restore but I don't think that would happen in safe mode. If that isn't the case we are left with a corrupt registry (which a repair won't fix), a corrupt OS (which a repair or SFC might fix), or a dying hard drive. Perhaps it is time to tell us why you are wanting to do a restore point. If you have another problem they might be related. You might be right about the registry if he has been using powerful registry tools that he shouldn't be (highjack this, combo fix, etc) or registry fixers) but I"m leaning more towards the OS or hard drive. Try SFC and scan your hard drive. http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=552bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

only 1 av program on computer at a time. I do a complete uninstall of old one, then shutdown and restart and verify old one has been removed before installing any other and then do the same for the new one.

I only used Hijack to identify possible problems for further research, I am well aware that used improperly, a computer can be turned into garbage.

I have check and there are multiple restore points both according to SR and examination of the SVI folder (have created an images of the partition using EaseUs - just in case but have not tried to actually restore the image - hoping I never will - I didn't install EaseUs until after I found SR was failing).

Hard drive was checked for errors - none found.

Previously I used SFC/scannow and it indicated no integrity violations. I have rerun it and it now indicates certain files were corrupt but repaired. i am attaching the log file. I also ran sfc /verifyonly but that log is over 7mb, I will send it compressed it you would like to see it.

Again thanks for your help.

That is quite interesting, as you had previously ran SFC and nothing was noted, now it has fixed corrupt files. So, is everything working as it should, for example, if you make a new restore point, will it restore to that point now ?

...Perhaps it is time to tell us why you are wanting to do a restore point. If you have another problem they might be related...

Please answer the question.

I am really glad to hear that you aren't actually doing anything with hjt because you can turn your OS into garbage. You'll still be able to use your systems just after a reinstall.

In Sept 2011 got BSOD while working with MSoffice 2003.
After computer shutdown computer wouldn't boot.
Finally (after several attempts) got computer to boot in safe mode.
Then did shutdown and normal restart but boot time appeared to be very slow (cpu t5200, hd 5400 rpm, 2gb mem)
Did another Shutdown & restart and timed it to be 4+ minutes (seemed much longer than b/4 BSOD)
Ran checks for malware &/or hardware issues (full malware scans, SFC, memtest, chkdsk and other diagnostic software that came with system. Only issues found were by malware check -was some low level tracking cookies which I had the software delete.
Boot time continued to be 4+ minutes so I ran SR using an automatic RP created b/4 BSOD. This is when I 1st encountered the SR problem. Could not find any RP that would work even using safe mode and disabling/uninstalling the malware scanner and disconnecting from LAN.

Because of work, I wasn't able to complete all this until late November. (This is my personal computer not my work computer) At that time, the only changes to the system other than running some of the apps was elimination of the tracking cookies and installation of updates - Vista, Office, Java & Adobe.

So in a nutshell my only real problems are SR doesn't work and boot is slow (haven't even gotten any other BSOD's and all software seems to be working.

I would have simply done a reinstall except for the amount of time it would take considering last SP was 2009 for Vista. My major issues are that much of the software I have on the system is licensed/updated but the companies no longer exist and for other software I no longer have the installation files. Also checked and much of the software is not compatible with Win 7.

From what I have read at Microsoft web site, since I only have the Gateway Recovery disk (no service packs) and not the complete Vista OS disk, I can not do a repair install because of the difference in SP's and drivers. So at this point, I will not pursue this any further. I use Easeus to make images on an external HD, hoping if the need arises they'll work.

Thanks to everyone for the assistance.

I don't think that system restore would fix your problem. It might help to know what blue screen you got. It would have been best to come to us then. With all you've tried I'd say that you are down to either a repair or a reinstall.

Hello, can you try to create a system restore point with another account that has Admin privileges ? Also, try doing this in safe mode also. Post back if those will work please .

Can create RP's with another sys admin a/c but they don't work in either normal or safe mode. At this point I believe the issue is with the OS - a corrupt registry, corrupt system file for SR that scannow doesn't check and that the only way to overcome this problem is to do a reinstall. Therefore, I will not pursue this issue any further

Thanks for your help
