Solved Pictures disappeared

My daughter was looking through her pictures on her vista x64 system. She was looking at a folder in C:\users\Becky\pictures\events which had several folders. Then poof, they disappeared.
  • I have turned on "show hidden" files,
  • I have turned on "show known extensions",
  • I've searched to see if she happened to drag and drop them,
  • I've check the recycling bin,
  • I've tried shadowexplorer, only one date to restore from and that was after the incident
  • I've tried a system restore, again only one date to restore from and that was after the incident
  • It not all pictures, just ones from the ...\pictures\events folder
I have stumbled across the missing folder structure in "C:\Users\Becky\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Virtualized\C\Users\Becky\Pictures\Events" however it just the folder structure, no files, all folders are empty

She's heart broken as she's lost several years of high school photos, along with photos from a trip to Europe. Anyone have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome
Download and try shadow explorer, you will find the missing documents. This time make sure that you go back far enough. System restore will not work in this situation

If you are sure that you did the above properly, download and try recuva.

I can think of only one more thing. Go to search and type the names of several of the pictures. It may be something like Becky in Rome, etc. If that does not work you can try option 2 here

I dont know what could have happened. All events like this in the past were found either by shadow or recuva. I do wish you luck

Edit: Before the above 2 download Windirstat, it will show you everything that is on your hard drive.
Talk to your daughter the version given, does not really sound logical. Find out exactly what happened. Did you temporarily lose power while viewing the pics? Was there some other type of malfunction?

On recuva before you start a scan there is an option for a deep scan. Although that is long perhaps that will turn up something. First though instead of searching for pics only on a specific folder, search for all docs on the entire drive.

Recuva actually did find stuff, a lot of stuff. I have since recovered them all and now the daughter has the task of sorting out her files from the meaningless files. But we were able to restore them, thank you everyone.

Hello, goes without saying that she needs to put all of those on a backup cd/dvd . right ? She got very lucky, but, if there were anyway to find those, given the circumstances, Recuva was the tool to use. Good job on the recovery.
