Windows Explorer unresponsive when disk inserted

Vista Ultimate 32 bit

New install.
When I put any DVD or CD into either optical drive it drags vista to standstill, Windows explorer goes non responding .. often 'greys out'

In MY computer there is a green progress bar slowly scrolling across the field .. and this can take several minutes, response does not return until that is complete.
(see pic)
Is Vista forcing some form of indexing of disks ...

How do I stop this

Go to Start, type device manager and hit enter. Do you see any icons that have a little yellow triangle on them? If not, twirl open DVD/CD-ROM drives and tell me if you see any yellow triangles on the icons in there.

    Usually have low HD free space left (<10 GB), often left on overnight. I really push its capabilities.
How much RAM do you have? The fact that WE is greying out indicates to me that it's a resource problem.

Is this a laptop or desktop? If desktop have you tried another drive? Have you tried multiple disks or is it a certain one?

To answer the above ... I have 2 x optical and same on either rive with any disk.

I have also noticed it does same thing if I plug in a USB zip drive .... same green progress bar slowly going along the 'path field'

It is a Dell 9200 with 4 GB of RAM, the Max that Vista can handle.
It is an Intel core 2 2.4GHz ... not fantastic, but way fast enough for Vista.

OK my misunderstanding... end result is the same though .. I have 32bit Vista therefore most RAM that can be used is 4 GB

Have replied back on Device Manager - no warning triangles there.

As per suggestion have just Run sfc /scannow ... and then sfcdetails.txt It advise some items will be fixed on reboot .. so rebooted and run again .. but same result.
Not sure whether I need to do anything about these - or whether they would cuase the problem I'm having.

Those files look suspicious to me. I suggest that you scan your computer using your antivirus as well as malwarabytes: Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

It could also be a power supply issue.

OK ... to check if the power used to spin up the optical disks was casue, trie 2 other things ..

Plugging in a 1GB zip drive
Plugging in external (ac powered) USB HDD

Both had same issue .. when I select drive from my computer ... can't access anything for some time, until green progress bar completes .. several minutes on occasions.

Vista now completed GB of updates (now shows it is on sp2) still same fault.

I noticed that you have a OS backup on your D: partition. Is that static or do you have some program keeping that regularly updated? Just wondered if that might be working in the background.

The intent is to put a ghost image of OS on this onece I have it all working correctly ... so that future restore will be minutes not days.
Just stored some temporary downloaded there for now.

As to Malware ... downloaded latest files for CCleaner ... full run, all OK.
Ran full HDD scan with Laspersky 2012 ... it did find 3 trojans.

Things have improved somewhat with the latest round of updates installed by Windows update .... maybe it just needed to get them all done.
