unable to login user, I do have admin access

Hi, hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction?

This my father's PC (my brothers hand me down).

He previously didn't need to login as a user at all, it would go straight to his desktop (wasn't even aware of any username etc).
I set up as an administrator so that I could change a file name, this worked just fine until we wanted to get to his desktop etc. It then asked for a username & password, whatever I try it doesn't want to work.

There is only one other user account listed as well as the administrator, I've tried logging in with this username with and without passwords set up from within administrator account to no avail.
All his files, desktop etc are there when I explore the hard drive as admin.

Any help would be appreciated?

I don't know if this has a bearing? The account doesn't appear in user profiles? Please see attached.

Hi,

From that description I am left a little confused. So, could you please be a little clearer regarding the admin account usage.

Which one works Admin & allows you to "Browse" the computer files etc. Does the Guest account work?

Hi,
The admininstrator account lets me browse all files, computer etc as well as see other accounts etc.
I've not tried 'guest' account as there doesn't seem to be an option for this. In fact when I start my own computers they ask me which user account I want to login into (windows7).
On this one (vista) it doesn't give any options, just asks for a username & password.

All my fathers stuff is in J&J, but I cannot login to this as a user either with or without a password set up when I'm logged in as administrator.

Hope this is a bit clearer? Please do ask if you need anything else in able to assist me?

Hi,

Is it possible to speak to your brother & ascertain what "Tweaks" he has applied to the set-up of this machine?

Unfortunately I don't think that would , he wouldn't remember what" tweaks" he may have carried out. Also I don't think he would have done much more than set up a user account

OK,

What are trying to achieve here?

Your dad should be able to know what he does to get in to his account? Ask him.

No, that's just it he never had to do anything.
start pc-straight into account, no login, no password, nothing required.
Now it's asking for a login, but this has never been set up

Also if I look in system properties he hasn't got a user profile, just the administrator account profile.

Of course you dont have a backup (and restore ppoint) to revert to

If you delete the Admin account you set up it probably would revert back to the way it was.

BUT. If you dad isnt an admin (if he was the only user he has to be) and doesnt know his password you may end up having to do a repair install.

I can pretty much do anything by using the administrators account.
There is a restore point from a few days ago but wanted to see if this could be sorted without losing last few days.

How would it be if I make him an administrator and create a restore/backup, then delete administrator account?

Would I be able to get back that restore point if we cannot login to his original account?
