Windows Vista won't load past login screen, after many problems.

Hey there Vista forums,

Hoping you can help me out.

This week, i've been having a lot of issues with Windows Vista. It's been freezing, blue screening, refusing to boot properly, and a list of other issues. I've tried fix after fix, and i feel as though now i've just compounded the problem.

From the start I'd like to say that I am an OEM system builder, and i have my own coppy of a full windows vista 64 bit installation CD.

I run two hard drives, 500gb and 750gb, with windows vista installed on the 500, and nothing but games on the 750.

The issue i have right now is that i cant log in past the welcome screen.

It started with the computer telling me upon startup that it cant load vista, because winload.exe was either missing or corrupt. Some research showed me that it was a common problem, and gave me some things to try as fixes.

So far, i have:

Run Chkdsk
Run Sfc /scannow (it didnt work)
Ran the startup repair from the Vista CD
Tried booting in safe mode
Run more Chkdsks
Run MORE chkdsks
Run more startup repairs (each one yielding different results)

And somehow, i've gotten the computer to turn on, and bring me to the login screen. However, once i log in, It just goes to a black screen with nothing.

I have researched this, too, and tried bringing up Task Manager, and then manually rebooting Explorer.exe

However, explorer.exe, windows explorer, explorer, Explorer, Explorer.exe, and any other term I can think of, is not working, because it says it can not find the program.

So im sitting here staring at a black screen with task Manager.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yard dog:

My bluescreens happened earlier in the week, when i would be using the computer (usually Google Chrome, or a game) They haven't happened in a while though, but i'll still look into posting them when i get the chance.

As for diagnostics: I've run multiple Memory diags in the past, and now, including the Windows Memory test, and Memtest, from the bootable cd, both passing with flying colors, multiple times.

For the sake of it though, i'll post my hardware specs:

AMD X4 3.0 GHz processor,
ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card
4gb Gskill RAM
500gb Western Digital Caviar Black hard disk drive, with Windows Vista 64-bit full installed
750gb Western Digital Caviar Black hard disk drive
CreAtive Xi-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion series sound blaster sound card.
Gigabyte Motherboard.

Well, we have a BSOD squad , they would need the mini dump logs and such to offer their assistance. Good to hear the hardware is good.. now lets check the software.

Please excuse my ignorance, but it seems as though i would need to be on the affected computer, in order to download and run the program. Is there any way i can do this even though the computer won't fully log me in, and I can't control anything?

Welcome
Yard Dog has given good advice with the BSOD posting. If you can get us that information, you will be a lot closer to resolving your problem. The BSOD report givesd detail information on the nature of your problem. See is you can get that too us.

Unfortunately, since i cant get onto my desktop through vista, im not able to run the BSOD capture program. Instead, i will try to run it through an Ubuntu CD (will this work?)

Memtest passed, by the way.

My Computer

If you run via Ubuntu the results may not be valid. If Windows has a problem that must be solved the Ubuntu test is invalid. If the problem is with the computer the Ubuntu test will be valid
Does the computer work in safe mode?

Currently, no, the computer does not work fully in safe mode (any of the safe modes)

It loads to the login screen and, just like on a normal boot, after i log in, the desktop is black, with no toolbars or icons, just a mouse.

My Computer

If it does not work in safe mode, you may not be able to install Ubuntu.
See if you can go to event viewer. Go to search, type event viewer, go to adminstrative then see what the cause of the problem may be.

Can i do this through the New Task command on the Task Manager? Currently, i have no access to a search bar, start button, or ...well, anything really apart from CTRL - ALT - DEL'ing to bring up the task manager.

Unless you meant to reach it through Ubuntu

My Computer

Give it a try with Ubuntu. It will serve several purposes. If Ubuntu works, we know its a problem with Vista. If Ubuntu works we can also, save your stuff and maybe get to event viewer.
