Hard time with drive

Hello all,

I'm new here and hope someone can help with my problem.

My Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptops 160 GB hard drive recently failed!

What I did to fix it was by putting a 500 GB hard drive in from a spare external hard drive and put in the recovery disks and hey presto it was working!! During the recovery process it said it would delete all data on the drive which was about 220 GB. That was fine as I had other copies of the data. After the install I expected to have a laptop with a 500 GB hard drive but the 2 partitions that were created are, C drive with 192 GB and D drive with 97 GB. I'm missing 211 GB of storage!! Should I have deleted all the data from the drive first? Does anyone know if there is a way to get windows to see the remaining drive space?

Thanks for your help

AMB

Try to go to disc managment, and name the missing partition if you can, then reboot.
Does the missing space, show in Disc Managment?

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the welcome and advice.

I tried disk management but there is no indication of the missing portion of the drive.

Should I format the drive and start again from scratch?

Thanks

My advice is lets take just a LITTLE time to resolve the problem the easy way. If we cannot, your suggestion will be the way to go.
Download and use WindDirStat to see just what is on that drive.

If the above advice leads to a dead end street. Download the free edition of this partition manager. If it cannot help, we may want to go with your suggestion, after you post your results. You may want to try and partiion with this software. If you can do so, if not, it should tell why.
Free Partition Magic alternative. Free Partition Manager Software for Windows 7/VISTA/XP/2000 and Windows Server 2003/2008/2000.

I do know from personal experience that it will not show up unless you name it.

If you go into disc managment, are you sure there is no partition that is unnamed?
I think this is the reason for your problem. Did you give it a name?

Thanks again for your help Rich but I have just discovered that I'm an idiot!!

I thought I'd put a 500 GB hard drive in but I actually put a 320 GB drive in!! I have a few external drives and picked up the wrong one during the repair. Sorry about that. However there is still 31 GB missing on the drive still!!

Not unusual - the drive is 320,000,000,000 Bytes, not 320GB - this means that it's actually only 298GB.
By the time you subtract overhead as well, this could account for another few GB
