    Install Problems

    Hello,

I have upgraded to Vista from XP. I have a small HD (40gb) which gets maxed out extremely easy. So I wanted to install Vista again but on another drive (500gb). Shortly after everything is downloaded I removed the 40gb and it wouldnt boot.

It kept saying that there's no boot manager (?????).

I actually had to plug the 40gb back in and it worked. Showing Two OS as options to open. I can run the old OS off the 40 or run the new OS on the 500.

How can I totally eliminate the 40gb and run only on the 500?

    Re: Install Problems

Hello Cody, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like the boot drive is on the 40GB drive. You can open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc), and mark the 500GB drive as "Active". Next, remove the 40GB drive, and do a startup repair on the Vista on the 500GB drive. You may need to run it a few times though.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Would I put in the "Vista Upgrade Disk" in the optical?

    Hey Shawn,

I did what you asked. Disk Mangament -> 500gb to Active. Rebooted. with 40gb unpluged

Same thing. I placed the MS Vista DVD in the optical drive and it came to a green screen like it was to install Vista for me again .... But nothing popped up but my mouse arrow! (No text, photos, MS logo ... nothing)

Is this because I have an Vista Upgrade disc and not the Full Version?

    Re: Install Problems

    Cody,

Do you have a retail Vista installation disc, or a OEM factory recovery type disc?

If retail, then you should be able to use METHOD TWO in the tutorial below to select "Startup Repair" at step 6.

    System Recovery Options

If you do not see those screenshots at the link above, then you could create a recovery disc at the link below to be able to with it.

    I purchased the Upgrade OS.

I put this computer together myself with all the componets I purchased from Fry's.

Yeah, that is where the blank green screen comes into play.

    Re: Install Problems

You might create a recovery disc to see if you may be able to with it instead. If needed, you could create it on another Vista computer to use on yours.

    Shawn,

It came thru! The Green screen that I was referring too, just took longer than i thought to get to the method 2 box. See below.

So, I tried it again, thinking I was doing something wrong. It took several minutes for this to pop-up.

Thanks for your help and your patience.
