Lost photos

first let me say that i am not computer literate. so please bear with me.

i attempted to set-up a new folder on my desktop using photos in the documents folder. when i open the desktop folder it says that it is empty. the photos are no longer showing in my documents folder. is there any way i can retrieve those missing photos?

any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Btw: How come your pictures ended up in Documents and not in Pictures.

as i said, i'm not computer literate, so i just put everything, photos and documents in the documents folder.

hi richard. i just learned that shadow explorer cannot retrieve old info from vista home premium. that's the version i have. is there any other thing i could try? i have a strange feeling that the pictures i'm talking about are gone for good.
