Solved Drive Not Found

I installed a new internal HDD, restarted and it is not showing up?
I see it listed in the startup, when it is detecting IDE drives in position 5.

Any help?

Hello Bill,

Could you post a screenshot of Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) and check to see if the HDD is listed there or not. If it is, then right click on it's "Disk #" to make sure that it's online and formatted with a drive letter.

Where would I find this?

I found a program that you are supposed to download and run to install the drive.
That did nothing, but it claims operation was successful.
"Acronis True Image WD Edition and the WD diagnostic tool"

Open the Start Menu, type diskmgmt.msc in the search box at bottom, and press Enter.

Thats what I did, no results!

Hmm, ok. Try this:

Open the Start Menu, right click on Computer (dark right side), click on Manage, then click on Disk Management in the left pane.

It is not listed above with a drive letter like the others.


I think it is formatting as Drive P: now, I'll let you know.

Sounds good so far.

Formating, up to 8% so far.

NOT GOOD!

Tried twice using Computer/Manage/Disk Management
Both times got to 54% and quit.

Tried clicking on the P: drive icon in Computer,
Got the message drive needs formatting,
quit shortly after half way on the load bar.

Quick format "Unable to format"

Now click P: "P:\ is not accesible, The parameter is incorrect"



I think the drive is junk? Unless you have another trick.

It doesn't sound good. The HDD may be dead.

You can try running chkdsk on it to see if it may be able to isolate any bad sectors that may allow you to be able to use it afterwards.

"The type of the file system is RAW
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives"


What does this mean?

Could you post a screenshot of the HDD in Disk Management to see if anything may stand out first?

DONE, It is formatting again, still states RAW under file system,
even though it was format as NTSF?

We'll see what happens.

Stopped at 54% again.
Maybe I'll try the Clean All?
I have time to kill.

No need. Clean does the same as "clean all" except for the secure erase. It would just end with the same result.

I'd recommend going to the HDD manufacturer's site and download their HDD test program to see if the HDD may be dead or failing. If you like, post back with what brand the HDD and model number the HDD is, and I'll see if I can help find the program for it.
