Hi guys and girls,
My name is Boris.
I have a problem and think somebody can help me out.
My desktop -Dell “Studio 540”
Operating system -Window Vista Ultimate 32 bit SP 2.
Norton 360 security system -We’ve thoroughly checked your computer and it look great!
Tune Up Utilities 2012 can’t find nothing wrong with computer, but no matter how many
Times I tried - “System Restore did not complete successfully. an unspecified error
Occurred during system restore. Your computer files and setting were not changed.
I run SFC/SCANNOW and window resource protection found corrupt files, but was not able to fix
Some of them. But when I type in command prompt : findstr/c:”[SR]”%windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log>%user profile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt Respond was:
FindSTR : Cannot open 12\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
C=\windows\system32>
Chkdsk\r
I tried to run System Restore in Safe mode, and tried to disable Norton security system, but result was the same.
Please HELP.
Sincerely yours ,
Boris.

Hello, try disabling your Norton, for trouble shooting . as Norton has been known to cause issues. Get the free version of Malwarebytes Antimalware and run a full scan in normal mode . Post how that scan works out..If you still have issues using System Restore and using the System File checker. then it may be necessary to perform a Repair Install : http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Welcome
The first thing to check with System Restore problems is virus/malware.
Make a full updated anti virus scan
As already suggested download and make a full updated scan with malwarebytes.

FindSTR : Cannot open 12\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

Boris.

The correct syntax would be
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
(note the spaces! - Your command was attempting to read from the sfcdetails.txt file, rather then the log file :

Likewise the correct syntax for CHKDSK is
CHKDSK C: /R
otherwise who knows what drive it's going to check? - it may depend on which drive is the active partition, or which one is the boot drive, or the system drive. (I don't honestly know which it would default to)

Once you've managed to get an sfcdetails file, attach it to yur response. I suspect that it will only be the usual SideBar.ini file problem.

What happens if you try to create a new restore point?

Hi guys and girls,
Thank all of you for your responds.
To Noel DR:
When I type in command prompt, I did it exactly your way. I tried to create new restore points
Several times, run Norton 360 and Norton power eraser.
To Yard Dog,Richc46:
I downloaded Malwarebytes antimalware, and run a full scan in normal mode . I tried run System restore
With disabled Norton 360 ,but nothing helps, I still receiving the same respond: System restore
Did not complet6e successfully. An unspecified error occurred during system restore
Thank all one more time.
Boris.

Volume Serial Number is B674=EDAI
Directory of C=\Windows\Logs\CBS
03/26/2012 06:47PM 40,882,983CBS.log

Dir(s) 353,634,025,472 bytes free

ICACLS C:\Windows\CBS.log/T
The system cannot find the path specified.

DIR%windir%CBS.log/S
The file name, directory name, or volume
label syntax is incorect.

Sorry my frend ,but it didn't work.

Boris.

It did :) - but you typed at least one of the commands wrong. (and I may have got one wrong as well <g>)

To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Try again, using that method, and the following commands (which I've just run here successfully)

DIR C:\Windows\CBS.log /S
ICACLS C:\Windows\CBS.log /T
DIR %windir%\CBS.log /S

Hi Noel DP,
Thank You for Your respond. I tried Your method and it work perfectly well.
In general I always using this method, I just didn’t know meaning of BLACK/WHITE icon on command prompt. Any way when I paste in ICACLS C:\Windows\CBS.log /T Respond was -The system cannot find
File specified.
DIR %windir%\CBS.log /S
Volume in drive C is OS
Volume Serial number is B674-EDA1
Directory of C:\windows\logs\CBS
03/29/2012 11:54am 42,097/582CBS.log
42,097,582 bytes
Total files listed: 1file 42,097,582bytes
0 Dir(s) 352,860,979,200
On command prompt the same respond- FINDSTR: Cannot open 12\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

I am sorry, but I still don’t understand, what it will give us, if we will have respond on all 3 command .
Sincerely Yours,
Boris.

DIR C:\Windows\CBS.log /S
ICACLS C:\Windows\CBS.log /T
DIR %windir%\CBS.log /S

Hi,

Please change the code as follows: -

DIR C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS\CBS.log /S
ICACLS C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS\CBS.log /T
DIR %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log /S

I hope that is right anyway?

The commands I wrote were specifically written that way for a purpose - the /T switch in ICACLS is the same as the /S switch in DIR - it searches all subfolders for a matching filename.

The fact that the original version failed means that there is something wrong with either the command that was typed, or with Windows - this is why I wanted the copy/paste reponse rather than a manual copy of the output.

bzitser - Look at the COmmand Prompt window.
At the Top left, you will see an Icon next to the title - it is a small C:\ in white on a black background
If you click on that you will get an options list, which includes Edit and its options.

Hi,

We need to get access to the information contained in the CBS.log file.

Try this command now: -

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
