Solved How to delete a user account

Hi everyone,
I have tried to delete an administrator user account which i don't need anymore (btw, i'm an Administrator) but when it returns to the user accounts after i confirm to delete the account, the said account still remains. So i tried to make it into a limited account to see if that works but to no avail, it remains an administrator account. Could somebody tell me how to delete the user account please.

Could you post a screenshot of this?

Is this just another administrator account that you trying to delete, or is it the built-in "Administrator"?

If just another administrator account, you might see if you could delete it using OPTION THREE in the tutorial below with a elevated command prompt.

The account i am trying to delete is just another administrator.
i have attached a screenshot of me trying to delete the account (blurred out names so to protect privacy) and the account still remains.

Is it giving you any type of error when trying to delete the account from the command prompt?

See if using step 5 in OPTION TWO of the tutorial below may be able to disable your local user account. If so, then see if you may be able to delete it.

Is the account in use?

Warning

• You will not be able to delete a user account that is logged in. It must be logged off first.
• Do not delete all administrator accounts on the computer. You need to have at least one administrator account created on the computer.
• Before deleting the user account, be sure to backup anything that you do not want to lose in it's C:\Users\(user-name) profile folder and subfolders.

You might try another control panel. From the start menu type/paste "control userpasswords2".

i tried the Command Prompt way and it said

"the username could not be found"

However when i first typed in

"net user"

and pressed enter, the said username and other account still came up.

My Daughter just told me that she used a CD to alter accounts to make them administrator and she can't change it back. Could this be the problem?

she used a website where you download a "bootup" on to a CD and you boot up the computer from the CD and it will enable anyone to change passwords and change limited user to administrator. is there anyway this could be changed? or if anything deleted?

That could be a cause. Have you already tried enabling the built-in "Administrator", and log on to it to delete this account with it?

is it when you enter

"net user Administrator /active:yes"

because if it is then i already done that and it is still telling me

"the username could not be found"

Yep, that's it.

Well, if you have a restore point dated before your daughter did what she did, then you may be able to do a system restore at boot using the restore point to hopefully undo and fix this.

If not, then it looks like you may need to reinstall Vista to fix this.

Thank you. I had to reinstall windows vista and it deleted the account, but i lost all the programs i had. It shows up in a folder called "Windows.old" but i cannot use them. Do you know how i could use them?

You will be able to copy any files (ex: music, pictures, etc...) that would like back from the "windows.old" folder, but unfortunately all drivers and programs will have to be reinstalled.
