Solved Erratic touchpad Inspiron 1545

Hi,
I hope someone can help me. The problem I'm having is with my touchpad on a Dell Inspiron 1545.

When i first turn on the laptop the touch pad works fine for about 4-5 mins max.
Then it will start behaving very erratic , as follows
1.Pointer will slow down when trying to move it.

2. Pointer will sometimes not respond at all.

3.Pointer will start jumping around after placed somewhere e.g When finally got pointer into position to click on an item it move off on its own.

4. Pointer starts shaking.

If i plug a mouse into the usb port everything works fine using the mouse but remains the same on the touchpad

I'm running Vista home premium 32-bit with SP2.

What i have tried to fix this.
From Device manager found that touchpad driver is Alps Electric version 7.1007.115.102 installed 02/05/2010.

From device manager >update driver. It looks for updates and says latest software is installed.

From Dells website find drivers and downloads section, enter service tag number. The driver they recommend is the same version as i already have installed.
Downloaded anyway and installed .Result the same.

Ran a full scan using McAFEE, ran a full scan using Malwayre bytes, ran a full scan using Spybot Search and Destroy. Result still the same.

Used M/S Solution centre .Result still the same.

Ran a driver scan by Iolo recommended by Dell. Result all drivers up to date.

Out of curiosity ran another driver scan by Uniblue. Result nine out of date drivers including the Dell touchpad . An updated version was available version number 7.1207.101.220 Dated 08 Feb 2011.

Revisited Dell website but could not find the version as it did not tie up service tag number. Tried to download without using service tag number but with no joy.

Am i on the right track assuming it is an driver error or could it be something totally different?

Any ideas anyone.

Many thanks in advance Dominic

This occasionally happens to me with my Logitech wireless mouse. The only solution I've found is to reboot. It then returns to normal. I have no idea what causes it. Note that I nearly always put my system to sleep rather than shutting down. It could be the problem would occur more frequently if I shut down each time.

Since you have the mouse for a backup-

I would uninstall the driver from Device Manager and reboot. See if Windows installs the driver. If it doesn't work, you can always reinstall the Dell driver.

HI wither 3,
Done as you suggested thank you, outcome still the same. However by pure chance I have found the cause of this problem.

It all coincides with plugging in the power supply/charger.As soon as you plug in the charger the touchpad will start behaving erratic (within 30 seconds).
Unplug charger touchpad is fully functional again.

I repeated this six times with the same results.

Now I have to admit this is not the original Dell charger ,which died about a year ago.

The charger I replaced the Dell one with was about £20.00 cheaper than the Dell one,
(i now know why).

I will order dell charger tonight.

Has anyone else ever come across this ?.

I have come across this. But it happens in rare occasions. :sarc:

Let us know how it turns out.

For info, Win 7 notified me that I was missing a Synaptics touchpad driver on my Dell machine. I installed it and after 4-5 minutes of normal use, the touchpad quit working altogether. Luckily have a juggle stick (I think that's the name) to move the mouse with. I rolled back the touchpad driver and now it's working. I didn't see a driver for it at the Dell support site. Think I'll talk to the Dell pro's.

New GENUINE Dell charger arrived this morning.
As soon as i disconected old charger (not dell), and fitted Dell charger, touchpad working as it should.

Thanks for all ideas and suggestions.

My Computer

I am facing same problem...touchpad works while unplugged the charger and won't work while charging.

But i am using dell charger which i got while bought the laptop.

Few things to be noted:
I have replaced the battery recently(its say dell, but looks to be duplicate china made)
Recently replaced the keybord.
I didnt see the touchpad settings before and after installing driver software it does appear, but no luck.

Please help as its really irritating problem.
