System Restore starting

This will probably be the idiot question of the month so I apologize in advance.

In an nVidea forum some member updated his drivers and now receives the Blue Screen of death. Other members including myself said to do a SysRestore. He just now responded that he "never set it up so I don't have any restore points". He's got Vista Ultimate. My question is this: Is System Restore something that you have to manually activate when you first set up the OS or by default does SysRestore automatically create restore points after updates, etc from day one (1)?

It's been long enough ago when I first set up Vista that I forgot if SR was something that the user has to initially "activate".

Thanks in advance.

What is it listed as in Services?

As an aside, I guess the guy couldn't get to Device Manager to roll back the drivers.
