If you run msconfig.exe and look in the Startup tab, is Dell Media Direct listed? If so, disable it and reboot.
In that programs preferences is it set to start up automatically? Also under the start menu look into startup. If the link for that program is there then it will start up automatically.
Thanks for the reply wither 3 and townsbg,
DMD and was not in start up. I understand that it starts from it's own partition
under control of a DMD button:

We seem to have fixed the problem.
I did a safe start (F8), a shutdown and then a normal start up. The boot was
successful. The Dell Media Direct indicator light on the left near the Studio logo
did not come on. The light looks like a movie film slate clapper director action
board.
My frustration is; "How did I get into this situation to begin with?" My research
kept referring to a DMD button near the power button on the laptop. On this model
(Studio 1535), I can not find a DMD button.
I want to avoid a repeat of this experience if at all possible,

I overlooked the obvious, further investigation revealed that the indicator light for Dell Media Direct is also a switch to invoke it. It may have helped if I had read the manual.

So it is fixed?
Yes, It is fixed. The DMD light is off and the boot is normal.
