I recently purchased a 2TB external hard drive and after plugging it in to my computer an clicking on the encrypted file that came on the hard drive my computer crashed an now it says operating system not found. I went into the system diagnostics to try an back up the files from the internal hard drive to the external hard drive an its says the internal hard drive is not detected. Anyone have any advice on what to do about this? Evrrthing on the computer was working fine until I clicked on the file on the external hard drive now it won't even boot up

I'm a little perplexed... Are you sure you're talking about an "encrypted" file? I don't see any reason why a manufacturer would supply such a file, and why you'd believe you'd need to open it. An encrypted file is typically a data file that is encrypted for security reasons. I could understand a default program being provided on the external hard drive to help you do partitioning or other hard drive management (like backups). Are you sure you didn't mean "program" file? Also, if so then what program was it? Were there instructions provided that told you to run it? I'm asking this because running a program from your external hard drive should NOT do anything to your internal hard drive. If something did compromise your system, it makes me a bit uneasy that it could happen so easily. You bought this hard drive brand new and from a reliable source?

It is an iomega 2tb external hard drive that I purchased brand new from the source. I purchased it to hook up to my playstation 3 to save an play movies an music but I apparently have to change to fromat of the drive from ntfs to fat32 an downloaded a couple programs (swissknife) which I come to find out is not compatible with windows so I downloaded easeUS but it would only convert small partitions of the drive and I want to change the entire drive to fat32 from what I understand off reading up on the internet about it so I clicked on the file that came on the hard drive thinking I might be able to change the format through that an as soon as I clicked on it to open it my computer restarted an came up with a black screen stating operating system not found an now when I try to copy the files from the internal hard drive to the external so I don't loose everything (using the system diagnostic tools) it states that the internal hard drive can not be detected an it was working perfecly fine till I clicked on the file that was on the hard drive. The file that came on the external hard drive reads IomegaEncryptionsetup V1.03, this is the file that I clicked on an then my computer shut down an now just keeps saying operating system not found.

OK, now it's becoming much clearer. So you actually executed a program included on the external hard drive for the file encryption feature included with the IOmega hard drive. I'm assuming that this is a configuration utility of some kind. Did it tell you that you must format the hard drive before use? If you did elect to format, I am wondering if you accidentally selected C: drive, and then it started to re-format your C: drive.

If this is the case, you'll need to run the Vista system repair, if it's at all possible to recover. But if you could not access the C: drive by booting up in Ubuntu, then you might need to use more aggressive disc recovery tools.

Does EaseUS see your C: drive?
