Solved Cancellation of shrink volume in Vista

Dear all

I have a HP notebook with Windows Vista (Home Premium, 32 bit) Operating System. The capacity of its hard drive is 160Gb and its free space is 24Gb. My hard disk had only one partition, so that I decided Shrink the volume using the Disk Management Utility incorporated in Windows Vista.

My selected value of "size of shrink space" was 15Gb, but after 23 Hour, the action of shrinking the partition is not completed yet!! :( I think this is not normal.

Is there any way to interrupt the action of shrinking the partition? Or may I restart the computer now? Is restarting the windows (and interrupting the shrinking action) dangerous for my data?

Thanks in advace...

Another 6 hours have passed. Has it finished?

Best that I can say is, try to stop the process using task manager, if it will let you. If not, reboot. If there are problems, try a system restore. Always a risk involved in these things.

After passing nearly 27 Hours from the start of shrinking action by the Disk Management, an error box appeared which indicated that there is not enough free space to shrink the partition!!! This is while the available size of shrink space was nearly 20Gb and my selected size was 15Gb

I had disabled the Restore point, page file, and ran a complete disk defragment. Also, my Hard disk was working all of these hours! (Constant 100% Highest Active Time in Computer Management > Reliability and Performance > resource Overview)

Being patient was very very hard work all these 27 Hours!

Thank you wither 3 for your attention...

24Gb of free space on a 160Gb drive should be ample for doing any kind of disk maintenance. Certainly defragmentation would be a breeze. I've never used the volume shrinkage utility, though. Quite frankly, I'm rather skeptical of those built in compression utilities. Compression is fine for certain file types but provides little benefit for others. I think it's best to just ZIP up any files you don't use much and then delete the originals after the archive is created.

By the way, if you're finding 160Gb is starting to become inadequate, you might want to consider getting yourself a new hard drive. Prices have come down considerably. For example a 320Gb drive can be had for between $50-$65, depending upon the rotational speed. If your internal hard drive is 5400rpm, getting a 7200rpm drive will be a nice improvement. Better still, if you can allocate more cash then you might want to consider SSD (solid state drive). While quite a bit pricier than regular drives, these storage units significantly reduce access time and consume less power (something nice for laptops). You can get a 256Gb SSD drive for around $190 on average these days. Granted, that's not a huge difference from 160Gb, but the boot up and shutdown speeds as well as any file access times will be reduced significantly. You will feel like you've just upgraded to the latest fast computer, because the hard drive is the slowest component in the chain.
