Computer Freezing! Help!

I have an Asus running on Vista and just recently it it has been freezing up quite frequently and I have no idea why. It seems to happen the most when my screen saver has been on for a while. It freezes to the point where the only way I can restart it is to unplug it. It also froze up a bunch last night while trying to watch an MP4. Could it could possibly be a video card issue since I have it connected to my TV via hdmi? I still don't understand why it started happening just now though. I have checked my drivers and they all seem to be up to date with no exclamations. There are no new programs running at startup and I've updated windows. I also ran virus scans so I don't believe thats an issue. Anyone got any clues?

Couple other things that may be noteworthy but are nothing new to before this started happening:

-I have an external usb mouse connected
-I run mozzila thunderbird with a minimize to tray add-on
-Ive tried switching screen savers but it doesn't seem to matter which one...I only have the windows default savers installed
-It usually happens when I move the mouse after being away for awhile and saver is running

It is an Asus laptop: model: X83VB-X2. In the meantime...does anyone know a way to reboot without having to unplug when it freezes? ctr\alt\del will not work.

With that problem, you better check your hard drive for problems.
That problems happens to everyone now and then, but if frequent its often the hard drive.
You can go to the website of the manufacturer of you hard drive and test, or see it this works.

Paton,
Thanks, I was just logging in to inquire if it might be an issue with the heat or the fan. I remember a while back my computer kept shutting down because the fan was wrapped in dog hair. I'm wondering if it freezes now because I have the power settings to never shut down or sleep when plugged in. I downloaded the program you sent me a link to but am not sure what a normal temp should be. Right now they are at (from top to bottom) 50\53\53\49\49. I did blow out the vents with compressed air before running, but havn't been away long enough to see if it freezes again.

As far as i can find, Max temp is about 100C supposively... Which i find high.

50C is okay, but you are at idle. We need to stress it out though.

Btw, I'm most intrested in Core#1 and Core #2 readings.

D/l prime95 |MG| Prime95 27.7 Download It will run yuor computer at 100%. Let it run maybe 10 minutes with hwmonitor open too and see now hot the 2 cores get.

Movies aren't to cpu intense, but the since you blew it out, it's quite possible the blowing removed the dust enough to fix it.

It just froze again. It seems to only happen when I leave it idle and the screen saver runs for about 10 to thirty minutes. The screen saver just freezes and I can't clear it. I did open up & clear a lot of dust off the fan earlier but I'm not so sure its from overheating anymore if it really only seems to freeze when I leave it running and don't use it.

Nope its not, its the power savings feature. How about trying turning off screen saver, and just use powering off After 10 minutes.

Well, It may be your hard drive.. Have you run tests on it? You could d/l Ubuntu and run it as a livecd, no install needed so it bypasses windows or your hard drive.

If it's not Hardware, I'm no use to you in Windows issues.

Okay, after playing with the power settings a little bit I havn't had a freeze in a while. (Fingers crossed) I set it to never turn off, shut down, shut down disk drive, etc. & kept the screen saver on. Hopefully that did it. Thanks for stickin with me on this one. Hopefully I won't need to come back to this post. Thanks!
