I am running vista 32 bit on a 531 Inspiron that shipped with home basic operating system. After a few years I purchased the windows anytime upgrade pack to go to home premium. Ran that for approx 2 years with no prolems until a nasty bug got me and had to reformat hard drive, it has been about 8 months since format and decided to reinstal upgrade to premium. Big problem at this point here, when i run upgrade cd. it tells me......quote..
Theupgrade cannot be started... to upgade cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of windows more rescent than the version you are currently running"
I restart and restart the installation cd and see nowhere to choose a version, dont know if it is thinking i want another basic or if it thinks i already have premium installed.. maybe a reg key..dont know. dxdiag and control panel both recognize home basic as operating system.
Any help on this problem is greatly appreciated and I thank you for your time and consideration.

Welcome
Rather hard to get Vista CDs at this point, where did you get the CD and what was the approximate cost. Not trying to be nosey, but trying to determine the validity of the CD.

So it was a clean install from the vista basic cd that shipped with cpu. I work construction and now have a mother being claimed with Alzheimer's and it is full time between work and caring for her, so please excuse my typo's it is just my eyes and brain are beat. When i reformatted to be honest I didnt even consider slapping the premium upgrade cd in,I slapped the one that shipped with cpu in. Oh my, I really hope you are not going to tell me that when I upgraded before I had to go the partition route and lose programs as opposed to just clicking upgrade:cry:...I cannot remember honestly.

Just start from scratch, follow the tutorial.
Programs will have to be reinstalled. Back up your stuff, before trying
