slow boot up time

hi i am experiencing some boot up problems

my problem is there is quite a delay to my system booting up (ACER net-top intel atom n230 1.6ghz 2GB ram vista home premium) it takes maybe 3 mins and dosent even display picture to monitor/lcd tv for 1min or more of that 3 mins? for the 1st min or so there is no signal (picture) being recieved by the tv screen.

i have a laptop of similar spec (laptop ACER intel celeron 540 1.86ghz 2gb ram vista basic) and that boots considerably quicker than this one. 1 minute boot time maybe less..
also (both have recently had formats and clean installs "no acer bloatware etc" bogging them down) and no items in startup folder in start menu.
just hardware and os..

any help/advice/info would be greatly appreciated

thanks

ha ha ok i will check that out and and report back

On a non related matter. When making an image, the HD that you send to must have a partition as large or larger than the partition that it came from.

so i would need to partition my external hdd first?

when performing the clean boot one of my startup items is display driver should i disable(uncheck all of them including the display driver or everything but the display driver)

as if i disable the display driver would i not loose my picture?

Create a system restore point so you can remove this software if necessary.
That being said see if soluto can resolve your problem

it eventually shutdown and re-started took about 5 mins to shut down then from boot i9t took around 1:30 to boot that was after removing just these three startup items

Google inc (google update service) (gupdate) yes
Google inc (google update service) (gupdatetem) yes
dobe flash player update service yes

there were 2 more start up items
symantec coporation (norton internet security) no
NVIDIA corporation (nvidia display driver service) no

i was hesitant to stop these at start up as 1 is my anti virus/internet security (didnt weant to stop this one because of loosing security/protection)

the other is display driver (didnt want to stop this one as was unsure if it would affect me being able to display an image on my tv?)

but if you think they would be ok to stop or if i can stop them try it with them off and then put them back on if required? then i will try with them off but didnt want to risk it without 1st checking if it was ok to do so?

thanks

I would try Soluto and see what is suggested, after creating a system restore point.
You could shut down the anti virus, but dont go online while it is off.
You uninstall the dispalay driver, you could loose you video. If you know what you are doing it would be safe, since there is a back up driver. I dont think that driver is the problem.

phew!! so i was right not to uncheck those 2 items earlier then?
"that was a stroke of luck" as i was jus taking a guess!!!

if they are the only 2 items left then is that as fast as its going to get (the boot time)

i disabled them (unchecked them) in the msconfig startup items list is that ok?

or will i still have to or is it advisable to do the services.msc part?

thanks for your help

hi have gone through the process however it also has as an option
AUTOMATIC (delayed start)
would that be worth selcting as a compromise of faste boot whilst keeping those products up to date?

thanks

Automatic [Delayed Start] should not be over-used. There's a certain optimal order of how some Windows services start and mucking around with them could cause further performance issues. So, use it cautiously and sparingly. However, if you have some non-critical 3rd party services that you definitely don't need right away, you can set them to delay.

I noticed that you opened another thread concerning slow performance... might be best to stick with just one.

MSCONFIG should only be used for testing
Services should be stopped or delayed with services.msc
Just type it into the start search box
Cytherian is correct about delaying Windows services
only stop third party services
That is why I asked you to click "hide Microsoft services" in msconfig

ok so would be wise to check if i have anything still stopped under msconfig. and if i want to stop that item still use services.msc to do so is that correct? thanks

msconfig is not an active display. It just shows what apps will be started and what services will be loaded. services.msc will show you the active status. If you run task manager, you can also see a list of just what processes are running (instead of the comprehensive list given by services.msc that shows everything, regardless of state).
