hi, i have a dell vostro 1000 running windows vista.
i wanted to make a copy of a dvd to keep on my laptop, i downloaded winx dvd ripper Free DVD Ripper - Rip DVD to AVI MP4 H264, Rip DVD to Android & iPhone iPad - Free DVD Ripping software.
after downloading i ripped the dvd to a folder where i keep all my music, docments etc.

now when i try to open my user account folder in start menu where this folder is stored, i click it and as soon as it opens i get a box pop up saying windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working. i click close program then another box pops up saying windows explorer has stopped working then another box saying windows explorer is restarting, which it does.
after this i uninstalled winx dvd and rebooted my laptop, i then carried out system restore to an earlier date and the same thing happens when i try to open the folder.
i cant access anything in my user account.
can anyone suggest anything to try and fix this error?
any help appreciated.

john

Try booting up in SAFE mode and see if you can access anything. Once in SAFE mode, also be sure to do a disk cleanup and get rid of all temporary files on your hard drive. If the problem persists, I would boot up in SAFE mode again and then try to roll back to the next earlier restore point. It may be that there's some spy/ad ware left over from that ripping software you installed, which somehow managed to propagate itself despite your rolling back to an earlier restore point. Anytime you see processes attempting to automatically run Internet or Windows Explorer, then there's something fishy going on.

ok im having a bit of a problem, i loaded up in safe mode and run disc cleanup, then went to system restore (earliest is 3/11/12 system: scheduled checkpoint). clicked restore then got an error message, the disc os (c:) has errors, windows has detected file system corruption on os (c:) you must check disk for errors before it can be restored.
so i set scheduled disc check on next reboot, i rebooted and it attempted to disc check saying i can cancel disk check at anytime but recommended i continue, then underneath it says disk check has been cancelled then it boots up. so im unable to do a disk check in order for it to let me do a system restore.
also i forgot to mention, when it first boots up to desktop a box pops up saying, error loading c:/users/john/appdata/local/temp/wpbt0.dll.

John, you have a trojan resident on your computer. File "wpbt0.dll" is the signature. See Remove wpbt0.dll. Also, you could try using SuperAntiSpyware, as suggested on BleepingComputer. I'm a bit surprised that MalwareBytes didn't handle this one.
