If I have .NET Framework 4.0 installed, why do I need the .NET 2.0 framework?

OK, I do understand that some software is designed to work with a specific version of .NET, and that one attempting to interface with .NET might not work if the version is newer than expected. But c'mon... how many programs are out there using .NET framework 2.0? Is it really necessary to have it installed? I can understand version 3.5, but 2.0 seems like really old hat...
