Solved system32\esrbr.dll error

Hi, since a couple of days, I get this error when starting vista:
"Error loading C:\Windows\system32\esrbr.dll"
"The specified module could not be found"

System is running normally after confirming the error but I have impression that internet speed is lower, especially when working in VPN mode for job

I did not found any reference to this dll on google
I ran registry fixers but no errors
I did not uninstall any software but got a virus attack some time ago
AVG, Superantispyware: no errors, no alerts

Anyone can help ?

Did you install or uninstall something about the time of the problem?

I also searched for esrbr.dll and found nothing. Weird. It must be associated with a recently installed program. Check the file date, and then search your program files folders for other *.dll files, then sort by date to see if you can find any that match. This can help you find what program uses it. Can you check your installed programs list (Control Panel --> Programs and Features) and sort by date, to see what were the last few programs you installed? That may help as well.

I checked a few DLL reference sites and none of them show "esrbr.dll". System32 is supposed to be reserved for Microsoft system files. Very few 3rd party DLL's are allowed there.

Lastly, when you do create a system restore point, where do yours get backed up to? The default is your primary hard drive. It sounds like you are moving them off to a separate device? I'd advise against that... better off to make room on your hard drive for the restore points in case you need them (which can be any time).

THX all for advice and tips, my reactions / questions:
- Nothing installed or uninstalled, PC is used mostly for work, so pretty stable
- problem appeared when getting some trojan alert when passing on a website of a shopping centre (decent one ;-)), trojan was put to quarantaine (if I remember well) by AVG, no AVG alerts ever after
- system restore is deactivated and all restore points were removed already some time ago, so no way to go back to an earlier state
- how can I find the date of that missing dll ? error message does only mention the name, I can find the dll nowhere on my system...
- I will start reinstalling software or better should reinstall whole PC but I not to big fan of that nightmare ;-))

Ah, OK. A trojan virus was coincident with the problem, after it was removed. That certainly helps explain things!

What I surmise is that your anti-virus program got rid of the virus OK, but you still have an internal reference to that file in your system. There are several approaches you can take. One is to run a registry cleaner, but most veterans at VF tend not to like them (they can screw things up a bit, but there are some that let you selectively apply changes). The other is to run regedit and search for this file, then delete the references. You have a backup you can roll back to if the editing doesn't go right, so I'd try editing the registry. Or, you can try something like CC Cleaner and then see if it finds the esrbr.dll reference unresolved. You might be able to let it fix just that problem.

"uewqo"="rundll32 \"C:\\Windows\\system32\\esrbr.dll\",whoetqwgj"

error is gone, probleem seems solved and PC still works... hurray ! ;-)) ths to all

Glad to hear you finally got it figured out, Rudy. I was going to say as a last resort to scan the registry, as sometimes there is a disconnect between what is in the "Run" key and what shows up in msconfig. Also, check the System32 folder to be sure that dll is gone.

Based on your error message in your first post, it sounds like the file is no longer there, but if it is then could you first upload it to VirusTotal please?
