redundant folder tree

Hello all,
A few months ago, I discovered a pure mess in my foldertree.
Desktop shows as my top folder with the following subfolders: Valued customer, public, computer, network, control panel, plus all the folders I have on my actual desktopscreen.
Under “Valued customer, desktop appears again with the items on my desktop screen but without Valued customer, public, computer, network, and control panel.
Under desktop I have HP[C] > users> valued customer again. The folders and files within the second Valued customer are the same as the first, but do not appear to be copies as the path names in properties are identical, all being C>users>valued customer… However, when viewing the folder tree, the address bar at the top does reflect the additional subfolders.
I can deal with the folder confusion, but I am wondering if this is affecting performance since my apps, especially photoshop elements, are super slow when saving files. If so, how can I fix it?
Any help will be appreciated.
