Solved Screensaver has suddenly stopped working

Gday

Over the past 48 hours, I have noticed my screensaver isn't kicking in. I read to uninstall PowerDVD (did that), stop the process ehtray.exe (did that), rebooted. Set my screensaver to kick in after 1 minute. Nothing.
I have my power settings set to "Never" i.e. Turn Off Display = Never, Put The Computer To Sleep = Never

I can preview the screensavers, but they just will not kick in.

Does it do that in safe mode? Try a system restore point. Is this a screensaver that you installed or did it come with windows? If you installed it have you tried uninstalling it? Have you tried another screensaver?

Third party screensaver. After doing some more research, it mentioned GPU drivers, I had only updated Nvidia's earlier in the week, but I thought what the hey, let's go and check. And there were new drivers there, so they have been installed. I then thought what else has changed, I had just done an update to VLC, so I uninstalled it.

Rebooted and oh no, Vista failed to load, I got a winload.exe error. After a lot of foofing about with what ended up being damaged copy of Vista, I put in my DVD did a repair. And I'm back :cool:

If you switch back to the Windows screensaver, do you have the same problem? What happens if you roll back your GPU driver?

Yes same thing with Windows screensaver, the preview works fine, but after X amount of time for when the screensaver is set it doesn't work. I haven't tried rolling back my GPU driver.

I do have installed Paragon, the only problem is I have the backups on an external USB HD, and Paragon is refusing to acknowledge there existence :cry:

I don't know why you're concerned with the backups at this time unless you did a drive backup and you want to restore it. Not knowing anything about Paragon, I don't know if it can do a live restore. You might need a bootable disc made in Paragon to do the restore.

I also don't know if the Screensaver is tied to the task scheduler. You might go to Administrative Tools, Services and find Task Scheduler. Restart it.

You could also do a clean boot to see if there is anything in Services or Startup that's causing the problem. We'll tell you how to do that if you want to try that.

I thought an easy work around my screensaver issues, would be to do a restore of a backup (Paragon), I have the bootable disk, have tried it, but it won't find my USB external HD, where my backups are.

Point of interest : After unsuccessfully trying to restore a backup image, on the reboot of my machine, the screensaver works ..... just the once though

Does Paragon have free technical support? What about a forum?

Yes Paragon does have a forum, plenty of views, not one reply

Yes, suggestions noted, at the moment Paragon is trying to do a recovery with Windows up and running (I know you don't have to say it). However if I cancel the supposed restore I will lose everything.

I feel an OS reinstall coming on :cry:

, I don't mind doing other peoples PC's but for some strange reason, I loathe doing mine :shock:

Yes, it seems that trying to help others with computer problems is easier than fixing your own.

Depending on the type of backup, it may be that Paragon can do a live restore, as you're trying. Sure hope it works.

Whelp update, at least my PC rebooted back into Windows. As for the restore that was a waste of 48 hours.

I know I have restored it before, after a catastrophic failure, but do you think I can remember what I did? (Old timers has kicked in)

I agree with that. Fiery do you know if you (or windows) has recently done an update to your graphics drivers?

He indicated early on that he had installed a new driver. I asked him to try rolling back the driver but he said he didn't try it.

I also gave him a couple of other suggestions in my post before he indicated he was trying a drive restoration.

Fiery have you rolled back the driver? There might be a bug in the new driver.

The Task Scheduler was a good suggestion, except it has nothing to do with screensavers.

The clean boot? yes.
