Solid State Drive and ACHI

I now have my Samsung 840 Pro SSD in and up and running. Here is an oddity, I currently have my BIOS set to ACHI, my boot order has always been 1. CD 2. CD 3.HDD.
I have noticed on boot up under ACHI, my two SATA optical drives are not being recognised, and therefore are not available on boot up.
They do show up in Computer.
When I set my BIOS back to it's "Native IDE" (it's default), both optical drives appear on the boot up.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

Hello Fiery,

Normally you would only see the "Press a key to boot from CD or DVD...." message like below for 8 seconds at boot when you have a bootable CD/DVD in an optical drive. As a test, insert a bootable disc (ex: Windows installation disc) into an optical drive, restart, and see if you see this below.

Do the optical drives show up in BIOS?

As a test, connect the optical drives to another SATA port on the motherboard to see if they get recognized then.

You might also double check to make sure the boot order priority is still set the way you always had it.

Hope this helps for now, :)

Prior to installing my SSD. I started two threads, as SSD's are uncharted territory for me [h=3]Preparing an SSD and Vista[/h][h=3]Help rom not being read!!![/h]and your pic there is what I was talking about when I boot up, under "Native IDE", I see that during start up. Under ACHI it goes missing.

For me personally I like my CD/DVD boot options (gives me security knowing if necessary I can boot off a disk)

I have checked, double checked the boot order, after resetting it back it's default, and at the moment, like I said it's an oddity, the only way both optical drives are being read on boot, is in my BIOS, my boot order is 1. CD 2. Disabled 3. HDD.

When I change number 2 to CD, on boot only one optical drives shows.

I have yet to pull out my tower and try re seating the connectors in a different order, this is because my case is a CM Storm Black Sniper and bloody heavy, I am a woman who is no longer a spring chicken, and lifting the case in and out plays havoc on my old back (yer I know oh woe is me :sarc: ).

Any way please correct me if I am wrong, but ACHI is for hot swapping? Something I obviously don't do, so I have reset the BIOS back to "Native IDE", with my now odd boot order, but it's working.

I was just wondering why the SSD would create such a mess, with my boot order?

PS My old IDE HDD, which has my OS on it, is still installed in my tower, but does not show up in the BIOS or Computer.
