Local Access Only on Wireless With Vista

Have a new Netgear wireless router and can connect to it, but can only get local access only, no internet.
Tried a few things with no luck so far.
The one thing that did work was eliminating the wireless security, but dont want to leave it that way.
Seems like this is a common problem with Vista.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Normally if the W/R sees the net, i.e.shows networks available in the right hand side of the Task Bar, then it usually means you are not entering the correct login details. Your login details must be exactly what your ISP gave you. For example check to see if you have to use Caps and not lower case.

I have several other laptops that have no problem connecting. This particular, which has windows vista, can connect to the router even with the security on, so I know I have the correct login , but has local access only and something is preventing it from connecting the Internet.

Local Access only means you're connected to the router. The Login connects to your ISP. If your login is correct and you still cannot connect to the internet then look for your security setting. i.e. AES or TKIP.
Click on the manage wireless connections, select the connection you want to connect too and then select Security. Change the Encryption type.
The only other thing if that doesn't work is to look at your connection type i.e b/g/n. If you're trying to connect to an N and your comp is set to B then it won't connect?

Could you please follow this tutorial and upload your ipconfig when your machine is receiving LOCAL ONLY access. This will help us determine what the potential problem could be. http://www.vistax64.com/network-sharing/284688-network-posting-tips.html

In addition are you able to try on another wireless network at all to see if the issue still occurs? This can help us determine if it is a router problem or an issue with your machine.

One issue I did have was that vista sometimes was unable to obtain IP addresses automatically based on default settings. Could you please run the attached file just to be sure:

KB article for attached file - Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

Hope This Helps,
Josh! :)
