HELP!: Upgrading Windows Vista Home Premium to ANY Windows 7/8

So recently I picked up an Elgato Game capture HD, to find out that the software required to use it only runs on Windows 7 & 8. I have Windows Vista Home Premium...

... I was wondering if there is a (legal) way of upgrading to Windows 7 or 8 for free? I read online (2009 article) that you can upgrade using the SIN code on the bottom right hand side of your computer.

I think it's about time that I upgrade haha.

If it helps, my computer is an Acer.

If anyone can help, I'd really, REALLY appreciate it! :)

Welcome
I will give you a definitive answer. There is no way to legally upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 for free.
You can get 7 for a pretty good price, since 8 has alreay been released.
I have Seven and it is awesome.

Hi Rich,
I'm seriously thinking of switching to W7 myself---Vista is driving me nuts!
Is it easy enough to do? Impressed with your opinion of it.

In addition, you can get a bit of a heads up by doing what I did, watch the procedure on You Tube.
It is really great to know exactly what you will see on the Screen.
Good Luck

As a further note the only time I have seen Microsoft offer a free upgrade is if the user purchased a computer just before a release of a new version. So for example for a few months prior to the release of 7 Microsoft advertised a free upgrade to 7 on new systems. When they do so they are very specific as to the qualifying dates and how long the user has to redeem the upgrade. Otherwise Rich is correct.
