Solved Cooling motor speed on laptop

patch41

Vista Pro
Hi folks, my wife has a compaq presario f500 Laptop, 32-bit win 7, Could some one walk me through how to change the fan speed they have a problem with over heating, One of the suggestions is to raise the speed to high on all the time, I am not interested in conserving the battery as it is plugged in with an ac adapter 99% of the time, thanks

With laptops, it's very hit and miss to have the abiity to change fan settings.

I'd suggest you look into how to clean out the cooling fan and filter. Youtube has great how to videos.

I hate linking like this, but here is your laptops service manual

It's really worth looking into seeing if you are up to pulling it apart to clean it.

An alternative way is to blow aire into the exhaust as you use a vaccum to suck air from the in port.

Here;'s a good video

My experience with laptops is the fans die young. Most are a pita to change so I install new oem fans, not worth cleaning and hoping to get a few more years out of it. You can try blowing out the cooling area with a can of compressed air, it may help. It's a very good practice to blow out laptops every week or so, stops any accumulation that if it builds up is very hard to blow out.

Thanks for the reply's, I have taken the pc completely apart and cleaned out the cooling fan, But some of the suggestions on line was to change the speed of the cooling fan for added assurance, I have been in the bios but I could not see an option to change the speed, Thanks Patonb for the link you gave, for the manual for f500 Presario, I put that in my favorites, also on line I found a nice freeware program which monitors more closely the fan speed, I installed it and hopefully it will monitor more closely, thanks again.

Speedfan is a very comprehensive program, and it may be possible to change your fan speed with it, hence why I said it's touch and go with laptops.

I usually use coretemp to keep my temps monitored.
