I've never set up a fax machine but probably the number of the line that you are using. Please see the directions.

The fax machine has whatever number is attached to the phone line it's connected to. Check its settings.

What's this got to do with Vista?

If it's Windows Fax and Scan you are using in connection with a fax modem, you don't need to set up your phone number on that.

If you are not using that software then check the user manual for the fax machine.

If your machine is sending any kind of commercial stuff I think most countries' laws dictate that the number must be shown or the faxes must contain an unsubscribe phone number.

That means I have to attach one end of a wall phone jack to FAX machine first and then go to setting of a FAX machine to check for the phone number?

No, I mean the FAX machine's phone number is the same as the phone that would normally be attached to that line, unless you have rented a special number from your phone company. Whether or not you need that phone number to set up the fax machine depends on the settings...I have no idea what they are, you have to look at the machine's instructions.

It has nothing to do with Vista as far as I can tell unless you are using Vista Ultimate's Windows Fax and Scan - are you? Your original post wasn't very clear on what exactly you were trying to do.

So you mean by default a FAX machine has a phone setup already and won't be the my home phone number, so if people want to send me a FAX they have to dial a FAX machine phone number and not my home phone number right?

Think of it like this: the phone number isn't associated with a device but with your line and whatever is attached to it so it will be your home phone unless you buy a line specifically for your fax machine. Does that make sense?

Thanks Townsbg, I'm not sure how I could rephrase everything to make it clearer. Stuckfree, it's just a machine. Your phone number comes with the phone line and your arrangement with your phone company. If you want the FAX to have a different phone number from your home phone, then you have to arrange for a second phone line with them.

Businesses do and I occasionally find it more convenient to fax a local business than spend hours on the phone trying to get through to the right person. I use Windows Fax and Scan quite a bit in fact.
