Re: document contains formatting information created by another application, it will

Is there any way to find out what the format is supposed to be? Most programs go by the file extension when they try to read it. They don't usually analyze the content. If it was .rtf then wordpad should be able to handle it. Try the free Word reader. Maybe it's an MSWord file.

Hi MilesAhead,
The file is .docx extension from MS Office 2007. In wordpad can open the .docx file but somehow can not read the formatting previously saved from MS Office 2007 it only display gibberish of nonsense characters as formatting but the plain text is display the same.So again is any fix for that?

Thanks.

Sorry but these characters mean that there is information that wordpad doesn't know what to do with. Worpad does great with files that are just ascii characters however those kinds of documents have more information than ascii characters and wordpad can't handle it. Be careful opening up those files because wordpad can damage them.

Re: document contains formatting information created by another application, it will

I don't know what else to suggest except to download samples of the most popular file formats and open them is Wordpad. See if any look very like your file's content. If you have something that matches, there's a good chance that's the format. Once you know what you are looking for, you may be able to get an open source editor that can handle it.

Afaik other than text, Wordpad can do .rtf. Any other format and you'll need some other editor.

Hi townsbg,
That's means there's no fix for wordpad to be able to view the formatted text created by another applications right.

Thanks.

I think you missed what I was suggesting. The files will come up with formatting characters. But if you compare samples of various formats, you may be able to recognize the format or file type.

For example, note the backslash formatting in .rtf pasted below:

================================
As an example, the following RTF code:

{\rtf1\ansi{\fonttbl\f0\fswiss Helvetica;}\f0\pardThis is some {\b bold} text.\par}================================

It's not too hard to recognize that's .rtf. The easiest may be ask the person who created the document.
