Not genuine... very strange!

Hi, I am running Vista Business and Win7 Ultimate on the same HD. Both activated. Today whilst using Win7 a " Not Genuine " message appeared in the LRH corner. I checked in system and the Blue Genuine logo was missing.
A message then appeared on the screen telling me to go online to fix this prob. Took me to Microsoft and told me click on the box and DL some software. After DL the software the message Not Genuine disappeared and in System the Blue Genuine logo reappeared.
I have run Avira anti V and all is well. I don't run any Spyware but am wondering if I should? ( haven't used anti spy for yrs ).
Any thoughts from the learned members?
cheers,
Eddie.

I think that a very possible cause for your problem would be virus/spyware. What I would do is to create a system restore point, so I could go back. I would then uninstall my current anti virus, download Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. I would then update them and run a scan. Although most here, think that software offers the best protection for Windows, you can then use restore to remove them a go back to the way you were prior to the System Restore.
I like MSEssentials in this situation, because it is made just for Windows and your problem is specific to Windows. Give it a try nothing to lose.

Hi richc46, thank you for the reply and advice.
Followed your instructions and ran the scan, nothing showing, all clean.
When I asked my question I was sitting here thinking I have just done what I am not supposed to do, i.e. click on an unknown screen prompt. Trouble was I was 3/4 of the way through it before I realised. Although as of this moment I just might be OK.
again thank you for your help,
cheers,
Eddie.

If you know when you did what you should not, with system restore go back a week before the naughty deed and everything will be back the way it was then.
