Solved Where Is Windows Media Center?

Windows Media Center
I have not used Windows Media Center because I was using Verizon Media Manager. Verizon is dropping support for Media Manager and I may have to employ Media Center to stream computer videos to my TV. But, I can't find Windows Media Center!
It is supposed to be on Vista Ultimate.
Can you tell me what the .exe is called and where to look for the .exe?

On my system it is not there. That is why I asked for the location of the .exe. I wonder if I ever had the program or maybe it got removed. I wasn't concerned about it until now. An update to Media Center on 9/17/08 failed. I guess I ignored it at the time. Is there a Microsoft Vista download for it?

C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe

I must have purchased at least 4 HP media center PCs and never cranked it up. That was just bang for buck afa desktop machines went. :)

Edit: You don't say what make your PC is. But I know with HP you can download all the bundled software.

As you said, I found the ehshell.exe here:
C:\Windows\ehome

I couldn't open it because of a software restriction policy.

I put this in Local Security Policy > Additional Rules :

Path > C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe
Security Level > Unrestricted

That did not fix the problem.
I still get the software restriction policy error.

I think I followed your instructions even though it was slightly different on Vista.
The screen shot shows the settings for Media Center.
I tried State "Disabled" and "Not configured". I re-booted after each try. I still got the error.
I have a laptop running Vista Premium. Media center is working OK on it.
I think I should try to find a download for Media Center and re-install it.
I do have the original Cd's plus the Upgrade to Ultimate. Maybe I can find Media Center there.

Not configured in 'Do not allow' means it's allowed.

Do you have a TV tuner card, if so are the associated drivers/software etc. installed?

It also needs to be allowed in your firewall whatever that is.

As to Brinks question, "Did it show if you had any policies enabled showing in "All settings". I don't have the "All settings" in Vista as is available in Win 7.

My firewall is AVG 2013.0.3426 Media Center was not there.
I added "C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe" as "Allow". That did not help.
Based on the wording in the message I don't think it is a firewall problem

On the Tuner card - I don't think that I have one. I can play video from Youtube or from local .WMV files. That's not tuning a TV.
The laptop which can opens Media Center does not have a tuner card either . If I try to set up TV It says "No tuner hardware was detected."
That does not stop it from opening media center.

Without a tuner card the use of Media Center is somewhat limited to online media and what's in your personal folders. However I'll leave that to the more experienced Brink to clarify.
That's assuming you can open it eventually. I'm sorry I'm a bit clueless on that score.

That error means that you have some unknown policy set to prevent WMC from running. As a test, use the tutorial below to reset Group Policy back to default, then restart the computer and see if you are able to open WMC afterwards.

I'm not sure where a TV tuner card came in with this from, but you don't need one to play .wmv files or YouTube videos.

Hi,
I have been negligent in pursuing this problem. Other tasks have taken my time.
My computer specs says that I have "Intel integrated video".
I can't find anything in Device manager that looks like a TV Tuner Card.
I will continue to work on this problem when I can.

I need to follow through on Brink's suggestion to reset local group policy to default.

I did find folder
"D:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy"
and
"D:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicyUsers"
I ran the RD /S /Q command from a boot command prompt against both files
I did not get the desired results. It simply removed the folders GroupPolicy and GroupPolicyUsers.
I looked at these folders before running the command and they were empty.
I still get the software restriction policy error when I run Windows Media Center (ehshell.exe).
