I had to reinstall windows Vista Business on 2 computers (different specs) this weekend, the install disk already contained SP2 and i just installed dotnet 4.5.1 after the clean install followed by all the patches from winupdate. Everything great, no error, no issues, no nada.

Problem is i cant run any .exe or merge any .reg files from external disks or usb jump drives, is it a security feature or a bug caused by windows updates, since I dont remember this happening when I used Vista like 6 years ago, and I really used Vista a lot.

Thanks a lot guys!

Do you have the same problem when you right click the .exe and select run as administrator?

Make sure that you have read and execute access to the files.

Do the files work on another system? Have you tried copying the files off of the drive?

Yes, the disk and all their applications work flawless on other computers on Win7/8.1, also If I copy the non working files to desktop or whatever location I choose, work as intended, the problem is on both computers running Vista that wont let me run .exe or .reg files from the external disk or usb jump drives :\

So, what do you get in response? An error or no response at all?

Two general things to check ...

Do these programs access data, or something like an Ini file on execution - if so check your access to the data files and your ability to create then if needed on the external media

Is this on a domain network, If So, check the domain admin has not set a Group Policy option to prevent execution from External/USB devices, also this may be a change to a default setting that was implemented, as you suggest for security reasons, by a windows update, you may want to check the Group Policy Editor.

I'm also a little rusty on Vista ;) so only general checks but hopefully they may lead to a better understanding of the issue :)

No domain here, the first example is the ATI Catalyst installer, couldnt be ran from external hard disk, once I moved it to desktop ran perfectly fine, the other example is I have a .reg that disables the prompt when running an application in admin mode, it couldnt be merged from external, but it worked once moved to desktop.

I even ran the .exe and the .reg on another computer running Win7 and both launched without issues, but, I did a clean reinstall of one of the Windows Vista computers, this is the install order:

Clean install by deleting partitions and recreating them with windows setup.
Once it was installed, updated drivers to latest version of graphics and audio card.
Installed dotnet 4.5.1 standalone full.
Ran Windows update and installed every patch available.

And still the same issue

Any more ideas besides the genius that suggested to run ccleaner?

thanks in advance
