Solved Recycle Bin Button Won't Work - Tried Everything

Hi, the recycle bin button doesnt' respond and empty the recycle bin. It started about a month ago, after an update from AVG to their PC Tuneup software that seems to have messed things up. I've uninstalled the PC Tuneup and done all these to no avail:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/131294-recycle-bin-corrupted-cannot-delete-file-folder.html

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66294-recycle-bin.html?ltr=R

I also ran the sfc scan twice and it finds nothing wrong.
I've scanned my computer twice for malware and it finds nothing wrong.

I don't understand it. Why don't these fixes work? What else can I try?

Hello Foxtrot, and welcome to Vista Forums. :)

As a test to see if it's an issue just with your current account or a system wide issue, create a new user account, and see how the recycle bin works while logged in to it.

Hi, there are other user accounts on my computer and their recycle bin button doesn't work either. I created a new user account and it doesn't work.

Foxtrot,

When you did the tutorial below, did you do it for all hard drives?

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/131294-recycle-bin-corrupted-cannot-delete-file-folder.html

I have hard drive C:\ and D:\Recovery. Yes, I did it for both. Nothing changed other than it emptying the recycle bin - the button itself still doesn't work. I had to tell it to delete it twice for the Recycle bin folder to completely disappear. Then I hit refresh, then the folder reappears. Recycle bin button still doesn't work.

I did method #1 also with the same result.

Just to clarify. Is it only the Recycle Bin icon not refreshing properly for you, or are the deleted files in the Recycle Bin not being permanently deleted?

The Recycle Bin icon refreshes alright. It's when I open the Recycle bin and click the "Empty the Recycle Bin" button that it won't do anything. I can select individual files and right-click delete them, but the main "Empty the Recycle Bin" button won't work - for all users.

As a test, see if using the "Empty Recycle Bin" context menu below works for you. If so, I'll see if I can track down and create a .reg file to restore the default registry entries for the other one to see if that may help.

Empty Recycle Bin - Add to Desktop Context Menu - Windows 7 Help Forums

It only half worked. It added the word "empty" to the context menu, but when I click on "empty", I get an error message saying, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Oh please no, this is a family computer full of gigabytes of photos and files and multiple users...

So the windows registry is messed up? Isn't there any registry fix that restores it?

I'm also having problems with Firefox not wanting to open for other user accounts, even after reinstalling.

Normally you could try doing a system restore using a restore point dated before the issue started to hopefully undo and fix it, but since you said this started a month ago, you may not have a restore point that old.

You could try running a SFC /SCANNOW command to see if it finds any corrupted or modified system files at fault, and able to repair them if any found.

If the above doesn't help, then it would be recommended to back up anything that you do not want to lose to another location, and reinstall. :(

Thank you Shawn.
May I also suggest, to the OP, once you have it working download Macrium Reflect and once a week make an image and put in on an external. You will never have these problems again.

Thanks, that looks good.

Does anyone know if instead of reinstalling vista, if I just upgrade to a newer version of Windows, would it fix the Recycle bin button problem?

If you want a new OS, do not upgrade. Do a clean install and everything will be fixed, except hardware problems. The recycle bin is not a hardware problem.

Well I don't really want a new OS. I thought instead of transferring all the files and reinstalling, just upgrading might fix the registry. That's what I wanted to know though. Thanks.

I meant just buying Windows 7 or 8 and installing it without deleting vista. I thought the software would just "upgrade" and install without me manually backing up files and deleting vista.
