How wireless printer be able to access the same network without typing the password ?

From what I know any wireless devices need to type a username and password to be able to access to the same network.
What makes a wireless printer difference?

You include the password when you set the printer up.

No really.

The first time I setup my wireless printer just by pressing the wireless button on the printer after installed the printer driver on laptop. Then the wireless printer automatically connected to the same network as my laptop and be able to print without my intervention of typing any password.

It must get the info from your router then, unless the router has some special path to allow printer connections wuithout password authentication.

I'd say read the printer manual or router manual, see what they say.

I don't know much about it but is Printer Sharing enabled in the Network and Sharing Center?

I wouldn't think that would be needed (though it won't hurt) if you connect wireless.

Hi Wither3,

I checked Network and Sharing Center the Printer Sharing is enabled.But don't know if the default configuration or I did setup sometime ago.
Anyway from what I know it's nothing related to password needed for the printer before be able to connect to the same network as my laptop.

By the way why you think is something related to Printer Sharing is enabled?

Hi Ztrucker,

I do believe that any wireless devices before be able to get the information of a router, the wireless devices first need to access to the same network first that means knows the SSID and password.

I misunderstood your original question.

To connect a wireless printer to a computer, the connection is made from that computer by running the printer installation disc and adding the wireless printer as a Network Printer. In that case, the printer doesn't need to know the password. If you didn't do it that way, then the printer shouldn't be able to connect to a password protected network.

When you add the printer as a Network Printer, it's a network device. It's on the network. Why would it need to know the password when it's on the network? If it was a device which wasn't added as part of the network, then it would need the password. For instance, when I take my work station somewhere where it can't see a connection which is part of my home group, then it needs to know what the password is for whatever connection I want to make. If I'm sitting at home and I try to make a connection which is not part of my home group, I need to know the password.

I guess I just don't get it. I read your words and understand what they mean but don't understand why a network printer does not require the router password to connect to it wirelessly.

When I setup my router at home, the first time I connect to it with my laptop, I had to enter the password. That's part of basic security.

It's not a big deal as it obviously works but I don't understand why it works as you describe and as I see. I'll do some more investigation.

Hi Wither3,
I do installed the printer driver however I never adding the wireless printer as a Network Printer because by default the wireless printer is found by windows after the printer driver is installed.

What you mean adding the wireless printer as a Network Printer?
It does means it will automatically get the wifi router SSID and password?

Open the Network and Sharing Center. Click on View Computer and Devices. Click on Add Printer. Click on add Network, Wireless...................... That should add your wireless printer to the network and it shouldn't need the password.

I'm getting over my head on this.

Edit: As I mentioned earlier, it should also be added to the network when you run the printer installation disc. I guess that's how you installed the printer driver.
