HP laptop with vista won't boot

Hello everyone,

I am writing this post because I have a HP laptop with Vista and since wednesday it won't boot.
When I turn it on it brings me to the recovery mode but it won't load all I get is the blue background from the recovery mode and the cursor that can move.
I tried a hard drive test from BIOS the quick test pass with no problem but the extensive test freezes at 49%.
The safe move will load, but all I get is the black background with the windows safe mode watermark on top and bottom of the screen and the cursor than I can move. The windows bar won't load.
I've tried the last good configuration but it gets me on the recovery mode which as usual freezes.
I don't have the recovery vista dvd since it was preinstalled on the computer when I bought it and they didn't give the dvd with the computer.
I am a student with absolutely no money and I don't know if it's the software or hardware that need to be fixed.
Does anybody know how I can fix this and start studying on my laptop again? Can anyone tell me how I can make sure my hd works or how to troubleshoot this won't boot problem?
Any help you give will be really appreciated.

Most laptops from HP and Dell have an option to reset the system to factory default. The downside is that everything else you've installed is lost. On my Dell workstation, I believe I have to hit F5 or F8 to get to that option. I can access boot options via F12. As I understand it, you can get a recovery disc from HP.

The only other option I can think of is to remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes and then reinsert it. I don't know how you do that on a laptop where most of the internals are inaccessible (without violating the warranty, if it's still in effect).

The factory reset option doesn't appear for me and I really don't want to loose all my files.
When I go to boot options they only offer to boot to recovery mode and I don't see vista, but it's listed on the bios.
The hard drive quick test passes but the comprehensive test freezes at 49% so I asked and someone has sent me the files I needed to try and do a Vista recovery.
I really don't know if it's the hard drive or the vista thats broken and I don't think there's a way for me to make sure and troubleshoot the problem so we'll go correct the software first and then see if the problems solved and if vista will boot, if only just long enough for me to copy and save my files.
This is so frustrating and I really hope I can fix this.
Thank you for your help and if anyone has a suggestion please post because I am out of options.

There's a program for recovering your files when you can't boot but, for the life of me, I can't remember its name. I know that's no help. Maybe Richc46 will see this.

I would suggest you backup your data before doing anything else. That way uif something goes wrong when you are trying to repair the OS, you won't lose the data:

See here: Emergency Kit - save your files from a dead OS - Windows 7 Help Forums

Do you have a Vista install DVD you can use to attempt repairs after you backup your data? If not, post here and ask Peter (Ex_Brit) to send you the link to the versions of Vista you need, 32 or 64. Include your E-mail addresse4d mucked up, like abc at xyz DOT com then edit your post and remove it as soon as you receive the link.
