Solved Computer can't tell time anymore

M

mdiemer

Why is my computer showing the wrong time? Even after I update it, after a while it will be off by several hours.

Vista HP SP2, 32 bit, IE 9
Gateway GT 5656
AMD Dual Core 3,000 mhz
Nvidia 8400GS card
Nvidia 6150SE mobo
8 GB RAM

Hello mdiemer,

Double check to make sure that your time zone and time in BIOS is set correctly.

If they are, then you may need to replace the CMOS battery on your motherboard.

Hope this helps for now, :)

Thanks for the tip, Brink. The bios seem ok. I also have a Linux Mint drive (I'm on it now in fact), and it does not have the problem. It gives me the time of day, in other words...anyway, why would the Vista drive have this problem, but not the Linux drive? Could it be because I am using VGA drivers instead of Nvidia's, which cause DDF's? (See my thread under graphics cards). Also, I am on the balanced power plan. that wouldn't cause it, would it? Another issue on the Vista drive is that I seem to have lost the ability to put the computer to sleep (again, not a problem on the Linux drive). So, the Vista drive can't tell time, and furthermore has insomnia.

You mean replace the Cmos battery? I suppose I could try that. I didn't do it because I figured it must be ok, since the other drive is not affected by this problem. I'll see if I can find one.

Did you try Brink's suggestion?

My Computer

Before replacing the battery on my mobo, I thought I would try something a little unonorthodox: Since the time on my computer always jumps ahead 4 hours, why not set the time zone 4 columns over? So I set it on Alaska time. So far it's working!

My Computer

What time server are you using to keep the time in sync?

Well, the Alaska experiment didn't work. It flipped me again 4 hours into the future. I just changed the time server from Windows to Gov, and went back to Eastern time. Will it work? Time will tell...

My Computer

Where are you located? Is it in one of the grey areas where two time zones come together in a jagged line?

I'm in Maine. sort of close to Atlantic time, but the error is in the other direction, and it's by 4 hours. I''m on my Linux drive now, which does not have this problem. I'll check to see if the Vista drive still has the problem, or if the latest adjustment did the trick.

Times have nothing to do with drives (apart from software settings of course) and everything to do with the motherboard - change your CMOS battery as previously suggested. The worst that can happen is that your BIOS reverts to the one that came when the machine was new.
(That's BIOS not the whole OS, it wont be effected).

OK, I'll try that. Do you think I should also remove the 8400GS card, and go with the onboard video? I've seen some stuff about how that card has a tendency to overheat, although I've not seen it yet in my computer (Gateway GT5656).

BTW, when I started the computer today on the Vista frive, the time reverted again to being off by 4 hours, so my last intervention didn't work).

I don't see why the graphics card would have anything to do with this issue. Interesting that Vista is acting up in that manner.....double-check timezone and clock again in that system. Both systems should have the same settings, the ones that apply to where you actually are right now. Check to see if you have any software onboard that may spoof your location. But I would tend to blame the CMOS battery for this.

Well, I made the 25 mile round trip to Best Buy and bought a new CMOS battery (actually two). I put it in the computer. It reverted to default settings. No problem, I never changed anything anyway. Time was still 4 hours off, of course, so I reset it. While doing so, I discovered that the date was also off - by eight years! Once I also set that, the problem went away (hopefully). But now I don't know if the problem really was all along that the date was so far off, and I didn't really need the battery. Anyway, I'm sure it's a good idea to replace the battery, I'd have to do it anyway. Plus, now I have a spare, and the local economy has been stimulated!

My Computer

I thought earlier on you said you'd checked the computer clock? Mind you replacing the battery probably activated the built-by date rather than the actual one as it hadn't yet synchronised with the Internet.
The spare should never be needed as they last for many years in normal use, but by normal, I mean turning off the machine when your aren't using it, completely off, not sleeping or hibernating.
See if you have anything else that accepts the same battery. (For instance I have a kitchen scale that accepts the same one). They aren't that expensive anyway.
Anyway, be careful to store the battery in a cool, dry spot preferably sealed.

Thanks for the tips on preserving the unused battery. At some poin I probably will need it. I do turn my computer off faithfully every day, or several times a day more likely. Never understood those types who leave it on forever.

I thought earlier on you said you'd checked the computer clock? Mind you replacing the battery probably activated the built-by date rather than the actual one as it hadn't yet synchronised with the Internet.

Uh Oh, the problem has returned. It's actually 12:27 am, but my computer says it's 4:27 am. What in the world is going on here? Is my poor computer in some kind of time warp? Should I contact Dr Who? I replaced the CMOS battery and thought that did it, but here it is again. Hoh Boy...
