Finding programs and creating shortcuts

Hi all, I just did a restore of Vista and wiped out most of the programs and shortcuts that I had before.
I want to create a shortcut on my desktop to the Windows file explorer program, the the Windows Control Panel program and notepad.exe but I have to find the programs first and I have no idea how to do the. The Vista search is useless because if I typ in Notepad.exe for example it opens the prorram it doesn't find the actual notepad.exe file.
Then if I do open the Windows file explorer how do I make it display the folder tree? Vista certainly doesn't work as well or as easily as XP!!!
Anyway thanks for any help in advance.

Hello Mastic,

You can create shortcuts using this below in the location field for them. :)

Notepad = notepad.exe

Windows Explorer = explorer.exe

Control Panel =

Create a Control Panel Shortcut that Always Opens to Icons View in Windows 7 and Windows 8

Create a Control Panel Shortcut that Always Opens to Category View in Windows 7 and Windows 8

I really don't understand any of this and it's super complex compared to the simple and logical XP way of finding the program and creating a shortcut.
Okay lets try this one step at a time with the file Explorer.exe to start because I need it to create folders so I can download and install or store other required goodies such as an unzip utility. At the moment I can't download anything because I have no way of knowing where it is put and no way of finding it, seeing it or running it.
Sow where is the explorer.exe file and how do I create a short cut to it???

Okay I did manage how to create shortcuts using your links but not how to find the actual program, do you know how to find the actual Control Panel program?
Also do you know if I can change the view of the control panel to a list with small or no icons?
Your links above are for Win7 not for Vista but were similar enough that I could work out how to do the job.

They work in Vista as well. There's not an actual Control Panel app, but the tutorials show you how to open it anyways. :)

The Control Panel shortcut from above will open the same way as you last closed it.

If you wanted a Control Panel shortcut that opens in category view, then the tutorial below will show you how to.
