no sleep

hi, about 2 weeks ago, in some of the microsoft windows updates, one of them changed the way that the screen that pops up when i click the start buttom on the lower left corner of my screen. i adjusted to that quickly enough, and the next screen that pops up when i try to put my computer to sleep. but, my computer will no longer sleep. when i click the sleep button, the screen goes black for about 2 seconds, then comes right back. my computer is in my "man cave", so i am up and down throughout the day. it can be 10 minutes or 10 hours between visits. most of the time i never know. and turning it off all the time, waiting for it to reboot is a royal pita. its > 8 years old, so i hate to let it run 16 hours a day needlessly. HELP!!!
p.s. this is a HP computer running Vista Home Premium 32 bit o.s. i have it set up to automatically download and install M.S. Windows updates.

With system restore go back to before the problem. Then install the updates one by one so you can see which is causing the problem. When you find the problem with system restore go back prior to that one update
Make a restore point after each update that you download. You can remove updates manually, but that never seems to work right for me

it was set to go to sleep, but for a longer time than i had specified on the surface page (sorry, i do not know real computer language) that is on the power setting page. i reset them to what i wanted. now i will have to wait and see if it works. if not, i will try restarting my computer, and see if that works. while i was in advanced mode, i ran across the power settings for the cpu. mine is set at 5% minimum, and 50% maximum. does that contol how fast it is working? am i only getting 50% of the speed of my processor can deliver? it runs terribly slow. so if that will speed it up, i will crank it up to about 90% max, and 50% minimum.

That is a setting for cpu underclocking for power savings and it is especially useful in laptops. You can turn that up however your battery won't last as long. What about those popups you are getting? Please take some screenshots of them.

i think you misunderstood what i was trying to say. they are not pop ups per say. i was trying (poorly) the menu that opens when i click on the start button. that changed the same time that my computer quit sleeping. my son said something about MS downgrading Vista to something like the XP o.s. if they did, not only does that suck. i do not think its right to screw up the o.s. that came on my machine so i will spend a bunch of money for their latest and greatest. /// i tried restoring my computer to the last good know configuration. sleep worked once, then quit. i also uninstalled the 3 vista specific (by title) updates that have come along since Christmas. the same thing happened. sleep worked once. right off the bat. as soon at the system gets more that 10 or 15 minutes on it, sleep will no longer function. i also found one regular program that was installed in that time frame. so i uninstalled that as well. no change.

Microsoft hasn't done any downgrading to Vista. In fact, they're still providing security updates for it (but not XP). Hopefully, you have SP2 installed.

Do you have a wireless mouse? I occasionally find that when I try to turn mine off after I selected sleep, it comes right back on and I have to just do a shut down. Seems that timing is everything on this.

no, i use a mouse with a tail. a LONG one. lol. i did go into the settings and tried clearing the box that lets the mouse wake up the computer. no differnce either way. yes, SP2 is installed on my computer. if this was acting up occasionally, it would not bother me so much. but letting the computer run all day long, or restarting it every time i want to use it are both bothersome. and i would not think that either is good for the electronics. the little bit of power its using is not a concern. but having a piece of hardware die is. my laptop died last week, so this is all i have for now.

I wonder how things are working for the author.

It turns out that I can't go to sleep mode any longer with my wireless mouse. Whenever I try to turn it off when the system is going to sleep, the system just wakes back up. I think it has something to do with the updates.

I have two instances of Vista on this system and when I log on to the one that's not completely updated, it will go to sleep mode. The only update that's not installed is .net framework 4.5.2. I wouldn't think that would cause a problem with this but I'll check it out.

Of course, I have tons of other software on the installation which is having the problem. I'll probably do a system restore.

I haven't tried anything on this yet either. Probably tomorrow I'll try a repair of the .net framework update.

well, i have partial success. the monitor screen goes black, and i can hear the hard drive power down. however, the (at the least) fan of the power supply still runs continually. where it used to power down right after the hard drive. i have done (i think, i have done so much "tweaking" this morning its kind of a blur) all of the steps short of going into the bios. the one thing i found really strange, was that for over an hour, every time i checked to see if sleep worked correctly, the settings in the control panel would change by them selves. as a last resort instead of trying sleep, i restarted the computer, and now (for the time being at least) have quit changing without my knowledge. i am going to let this go to sleep automatically (i have not checked that function yet) and see if after a while, the power supply will power down as well. i get this feeling, that there is a virus, or rouge program in my computer that is going undetected. i know of several programs listed in the control panel, that have no information on them, when they were installed, and they can not be uninstalled. maybe they are necessary programs that the computer needs to function. but they have quite suspicious names. like CustomerResearchOFolder, eSupportOFolder, Destinations, and there are several more. the name of the folder or program is all that is available. but they have been there a long time before i had problems with no sleep.

Aren't you special. I uninstalled all updates back to mid-December. No luck. I reinstalled them and no changes.

I have a sleep button on my keyboard and it puts Windows to sleep.

Windows just keeps stopping the sleep command when I try to shut off my mouse.

What did you do specifically that fixed it?

Thanks. It's ironic that the helper is now the helpless.

I put it to sleep last night using the keyboard button. I woke it up this morning using the mouse and Vista said a USB device (meaning my mouse) wasn't recognized. I rebooted to fix that. I'm convinced it has something to do with the mouse. It used to happen when the batteries were at a certain stage in life. I've messed with the Logitech controls to no avail. The problem will probably unexplicably disappear.

that's odd. my mouse is usb powered, but, it is a Logitech as well. its been connected for months, so what pops into my little brain is that maybe there is a glitch between an update, Vista, and Logitech mice. i also removed a bunch of updates (and they still have not been reinstalled) before i got this fixed (or maybe patched is a better word). but i do not know if there would be any residual software left after removing the updates. i know in other software there is sometimes shared files, that get left behind. maybe one of those shared files was changed. i know this sounds like i am looking for a way to blame the updates. i am not. i would just like to get to the bottom of it. so anyone else having problems does not have to go thru all of this. just as a side note, still, if i manually put my computer to sleep, the power supply will not shut down. but when the computer puts itself to sleep, via the timer settings, the power supply shuts down almost immediately.
